Back To The Rock, cool.

Post by fcollazo » Sat Nov 27, 2010 7:19 am

I really enjoy this song now. I cant imagine the record without it. It has a beatles like part in the middle, very interesting for Petra. It just needs a guitar solo at the end, I think. What do you guys think?

You're the physician, don't ask me about what the symptoms of your illness mean.
Just kidding. I like the song, but mot really the part in the middle. Other than that part, it's pretty solid! Just my opinion, anyway. Absolutely love Too Big to Fail!

I like it, but I liked it on Greg X Volz's solo album too.

I have not heard the Greg solo version. Is it really that different? What did they change?

Greg's solo version is just more of a pop version. It's good, but doesn't have the rock edge that the Petra version has.

I was listening to BTTR on my 6 hour drive home last night- it's been mentioned before that some of the lyrics are a little corny, but the melody is solid IMO. They could have rocked the track a little more and I think people would have received it a little better. The bridge is pretty good though.

IMO the weakest song on the album; It was nothing what I was expecting. Nothing about it says Petra or Classic Petra for that matter.

I personally like TBTF, but several of the people I've played it for like the BTTR better than TBTF. I think it's wise Petra created songs to reach a wider audience. Both songs are great, imo. I love the redos too.

Back to the Rock isn't the type of song that we've all come to love about Petra. However, it does grow on you and I do like it but to me it has that 80s early 90s Garage Band feel to it.

I hope the next album has a better song from Greg.

HIInhre were always some odd numbers, like All Over Me and Friends. But this onefg ies a more advanced tune. Petra can not be only mindless grind and metal. You've got to have some groove and unexpected passages in songs. Like I said, the bridge is quite clever, msih maybe because I like the Beatles.

Well I for one think the Beatles are so overated. Like the song BTTR their lyrics and music are just elementary. This song sounds like a very young song writer wrote his first song. Come on Greg has been writing for along time and he just seems not to have evolved into anything.

Simply, Back to the Rock is the weakest song of the Album...

Musically, the song BTTR reminds me of something off of Charlie Daniels "Steel Witness" album from some years ago. Not a bad thing necessarily, as the CDB is a killer band. I had different expectations of what the song would be. I was expecting big riffage judging by the title, not moderate rock. The Album as a whole is awesome. Everybody has different tastes in music, and when you're splitting hairs in the context of one band's style, they've got something good for just about all of the fans on it.

You detractors! Just kidding. I love the song. And the Beatles just made that style were you have complex 3 part harmonies with a rocking string section, like the bridge of BTTR. That's what I call intelligent, sophisticated arrangement rock.

I think "Back to the Rock" is a fine song...very remniscent of some of the other classic Petra tunes that Volz penned. The Petra version is tons better than the one that Greg recorded on his solo album. I think the biggest issue with BTTR is simply that the last original songs we heard from any version of Petra were off of Jekyll and Hyde. Looking at it from that perspective, BTTR could be a shock to the system. But, if you divorce yourself from the songs from the Schlitt fronted Petra and think of the last songs that a Volz led Petra, it is not nearly the leap...in fact I think it's a pretty good fit.

Having said all that...I still prefer Too Big To Fail!
