Swine Tour - 20 years ago today

Post by sue d. » Tue Oct 18, 2016 8:52 pm

Exactly 20 years ago today a dream of mine came true... my very first concert I promoted with John Schlitt. The band also included Kevin Brandow and Pete Orta before they were actually members of Petra.

This was taken with a big monster VHS camera... not the best, but it does show how awesome this band was. I kept saying that they sounded just like the CD. Enjoy!

So apparently "Union" was not the first time John worked with White Heart members. That's John Thorn on bass.

Thorn was also the road manager... funny, they called me a number of times, insisting that everything be ready and not to be late or unprepared. I was told in no uncertain terms that I had better have everything in place.

The bus was supposed to pull in by 1pm or thereabouts... all my team was there and waiting. And waiting. And waiting... the bus didn't pull in until 4:30pm! No clue where they were or what happened. Set up and sound check was a huge rush, and the guys didn't even get a great dinner that was planned.

It was a great show, but I'll always remember the "better be ready" scenario!

Something unexpected like a bus breakdown may have happened, but it's wise not to demand someone be ready if you're not able to do so. It would have been good for someone to pick up a phone and let you know what was happening. One of my pet peeves is people who expect from others what they don't do or complain about things they're as guilty of as anyone else.

Yeah, I agree about the courtesy call. Should have happened.

But....most of the time, artists are used to being the ones having to wait around for things to be done, jacking with their nap time, dinner time, etc. When I was a touring band engineer, I didn't have to deal with churches and Christian promotors, so my life was really easy. When I was on the Christian band side of things, Christianity, God, "Souls" and "Ministry" were every excuse why checks bounced, gear wasn't right, things were not on time, insured, etc.

That does work both ways. Although unexpected things may happen, the promoters, churches and so on should be doing their part too. There is no excuse for not paying them or folllowing through with an agreement.

Whatever the case, you do reap what you sow, so it's a good idea to treat others the way you'd want to be treated.

Well, that was 20-years, so long-distance communication wasn't anywhere near as easy or convenient as it is today. A phone call may have simply not been possible, and then once they arrive they have to rush the load-in and don't have the time or desire to chat about what happened on the road several hours earlier.

Today, a courtesy call, or text, or email, or whatever is customary. Back then, it was more of a luxury.

That is a good point. Technology wasn't what it is now. Whatever the case, there is a lot involved in planning a concert; unexpected things can happen.
