GXV Covering John Schlitt's Petra

In an alternative universe, what 10 songs from John Schlitt's time with Petra would you most want to hear Greg cover?

The whole BTTS album was really a Volz record. I think he could cover it all and it would sound completely natural for him, and fitting as the continuation of BTS.

This would be very interesting to hear. I listened to it today and tried to imagine Greg singing "Altar Ego."

Totally disagree. Bob told Greg in early 1985 that once the BTS tour was done that they were going a different direction and bringing in a new vocalist. The Elfante brothers were with Bob & John Lawry in the studio recording & writing BTTS as early as February 1985 and the whole album was completed without vocals by August 1985. Interesting note to help the recording process along John Elfante sang and recorded some lead vocal demos during that time.
John Schlitt audition in late September 1985 singing Alter Ego & Thankful Heart. BTTS was completely written with an edgier vocalist in mind which was totally intentional to get away from the JDB & GXV style. I urge you to go listen to MPTY, NOTW, BTS, & BTTS back to back in order and you will hear a totally different sound and writing style from the GXV offerings to BTTS; they sound like a totally different band and most fans at the time didnt realize it was Petra.
It's funny on how CITAS was recorded after BTTS and the only reason why it was done was because JDB & Petra were under contract with Star Song for one more album.
FORGIVE! FORGET! & LET GO!

I don't hear much of a different style of writing music or lyrics at all, except for a few songs. I hear different sounds. BTTS sounds like the natural progression back from techno rock. That is more of a Greg X Volz style record than a John Schlitt record stylistically. John's vocals were in transition during this period and he did not match the band at all IMO. Now, by the time they got to TMW, THAT was a John Schlitt record. From that record on, it was like, "GXV who?" The line had been crossed.

I'd love to hear Greg tackle the entirety of Back to the Street.

While it may not have been written specifically for Greg, I think it's pretty clear that Bob was writing for someone who sounded almost exactly like Greg, which makes sense because that's what Bob knew and who he was used to writing for.

A songwriter isn't going to be able to change their style overnight, even if they wanted to. So while they already were planning to get a new vocalist (Greg had already announced his departure), they weren't totally prepared for such a drastic change. The only way they could have made the transition cleaner is by throwing away BTTS altogether, and we wouldn't want them to do that, would we?
