That was great!
Still.....
The only thing I could think about was...THAT was 1986!?!?! Who brought the HUGE camera to the concert!
I mean no cell phone cameras or poocket size cam corders...that had to be one of the first portable cameras and they were HUGE!

You can see the full concert here: http://johnwschlitt.com/fans/video4.htm
(courtesy of Trodland and Petrafiles.com, of course!)
I bought my first camcorder in 1988... and I trucked it all over the place. They weren't THAT huge! At least you got a STABLE PICTURE, because they rested on your shoulder instead of in front of your face.

I hear ya Sue!! We still have one of those old late 80s - early 90s big JVC video cameras and I tell ya what - It IS easier to get a more stable shot with it rested on your shoulder and I like it better!! Just if the picture was as good as newer cameras ...
But yeah gotta agree with ya Brent - John was ON!

86 Concert Video
I really enjoyed this as well.
However, the set list seemed odd because of missing BTS and Computer Brains (although Bob mentioned tehcnical difficulties that may have caused that). It was a good list, but bit of a throwback. I'm suprised they didn;t preview "Thankful Heart" or something else.
I'm not sure what month this was shot, but in June I saw them on the BTTS tour. I was a roadie with a local band that opened and was able to be there during the sound check. We were all amazed at "the new guy's"voice. The live version of BTTS sounded just like the CD. We were amazed.

March 12, 1986
Video is from Johns first concert ever ON TOUR with Petra, on March 12, 1986 in Norway! The concert was advertised with Greg X Volz as lead vocalist. I have the original flyer from the concert - with photos of Greg on it! Check out my concert shots here:

John
If you watch the whole concert, John does struggle with some of Greg's material, though he got better at doing it as the years went by. His biggest drawback is that all though he can hit the high notes fairly well, he lacks the low to high range that Greg had and generally has to scream to get to the high notes, whereas Greg didn't have to, so it's not everything most people here seem to think it is, but there are very few singers who could have even tried to fill Greg's shoes.

John has said that he doesn't like to sing down there. It is not in his power range. When a person sings out of their power range, they sound like they have a different voice.
I can't really fault his performance. He had little time to prepare a voice that had been unused on a tour for years. He was replacing a singer that was THE voice of Petra, who had co-written tunes, etc.
His energy and attack of the tunes are inspiring to me.

I agree Brent!
And after a little while of getting back into the groove of things - JOHN became "The Voice of Petra!!"
I love both Greg and John's voice both and agree that Greg had a little more power in the lower range... but I feel that John's stage presence and more raspy singing style was more appealing to teens and young adults...
The first thing that I noticed about John Schlitt when I first saw him live is that he REALLY connects with the audience - I was 16 and I found his style very cool and hip if you will - as did my friend (who was not a Christian at the time.)
But we could go back and forth a million times about whos the better singer - and my honest opinion is that they are both equally skilled and gifted with vocal abilities and it comes down to the listener's preference.

Oh, yes, 86. That's been a few years ago now.... It is sort of unfair to compare, because Greg and the Schlittmeister have such different voices. Greg's voice always had more of a trained sound to me. I'm like most people, when I'm used to a certain sound I don't like it initially when it changes. Greg was a hard act to follow, but John held his own, and although I'll always love Greg, it's John's voice I think of now as being "the voice of Petra".

Herr Volz und der Schlittmeister, ja!
Do both the names Schlitt and Volz come from German?
