As one who has never been north of Nashville I have no clue were Indiana is. I don't know if I can go or not but it would be worth the trip just to see Lucas McGraw done live.

There is no way they can get togher without doing Lucas McGraw.

surprised

I'm a little surprised that Petra's official webpage hasn't mentioned this incredible "can't believe it's actually happening" event. I mean, this is big news to us Petra fans and is big Petra news in general. Oh well. Later!

This absolutely has to be taped, and in good quality! I live about 4 hours away from Angola, IN, but with a 3 month old son, there's just no way my wife and I would be able to make it. Perhaps in our pre-child days we would have been crazy enough to hop in the car and make the trip, but not any more.

So somebody tape this show and put it up on the net as soon as possible!

I e-mailed Bob and he responded. Bob would like to record it. I think that the concerns are:

1. Flying in from Switzerland one hour before the show.
2. The fact that the original band will have had only one day to practice.
3. Transport expenses. I was going to charge fuel costs only, nothing for the rental of a $60k system and engineer. But, as we all know, fuel could be double what it is now.

So, I have not heard back from him in a week or so. I need to know quickly. Let's hope that they get comfortable with it. Recording is just an unavoidable source of excess heart palpatations for performers. There will be stress on that stage as it is, trying to live up to expectations. So recording may be added stress that they don't want/need.

What I would like to see is the old band and the current band jam on God Gave R & R. I think that it would be cool.

Back in 1969 or 1970 John Lennon and his Plastic Ono Band did a concert they recorded and put out on an album. They band had never played together before, the only practice they had was on the plane on the way to the show. At the beginning of the concert Lennon confessed they had never played before. The music on the album isn't perfect, but that is what gave it character. It was a great album. If it was okay for the Plastic Ono Band to record a live album and release it without practice, then surely Petra can as well. The mistakes they make will give it character. The point isn't to be perfect. I am sure they will have some bad starts too. They should record and release the album regardless of the performance.

At first I couldn't see them releasing a reunion show on a record (sorry...CD). I thought that this recording would be for them to have and to hold.

If they did do something with it, it should go directly from their website store, as a specialty item for hardcore fans. They already have to shake the 80's arena rock image in the marketplace. They don't need to add to the fight with some early 70's material. We all see the point of it, but the market may not.

Brent, that is so very nice of you to offer your services.

Seems, though, that the mindset is that if it's not totally PROFESSIONAL (on the part of the band, not you), that it's not worth putting out there.

What they (whoever makes that decision = Bob, I assume) doesn't realize is that no matter how pro or non-pro it may appear, a video like this would be worth it's weight in gold as a collector's item for fans. LIke you said, keep it an underground specialty item, charge a few bucks for it and away you go.

I'm sure a few errors in musicianship would be overlooked by diehard fans who want to see something like this.

This is an event. People will be realistic about the band's sharpness - it's an opportunity for the people to see these guys together and see how they interact. If this doesn't get recorded, I'm going to scream bloody murder.

At the very least we need an army of home cameras. Then we take the best one and call it the "Official Petra Bootleg video"

So has anyone e-mailed Bob and requested they record the concert and sell it from the Petra site? Has this new idea been sent to him? If not, someone needs to ask him. I think the idea of selling it as a collector's piece is an excellent idea.

The answer is a big no. Though the recording of the project is simple enough, it would require added time and money for someone to edit, mix and master the show.

Besides, recording this correctly would entale the current sound comapny providing functions/gear that were not in the technical rider. Additions increase the cost of production to the promoter.

Again, these boys are gonna be tired coming off of an international flight, and not having much of a soundcheck, if one at all. Maybe it is for the better.

recording permission

Post by jared » Tue May 18, 2004 3:30 pm

At the very least, who can we contact to get permission to hand record the concert? My father in law is willing to record it for me and my family, but I know that it's generally discouraged / outlawed. Maybe you know who to contact Sue?
