PHPPBB setup

Post by String » Wed Oct 01, 2003 5:21 pm

For the person who set this up...was this an easy setup? I am thinking about going this route on a couple of my boards as well, not to be held hostage by Ezboard.

Would this work on a domain with ASP support? I tried finding out if my domain server handles this (I go through GoDaddy) and got the ASP support. That was on the top end of the three plans. There was the general, the CGI, then the ASP version.

It's pretty easy. Some things involve a little more doing than I'd like. You edit template files to change the headers, footers, and other things. Not too bad.

You do need PHP support from your web host. I *think* GoDaddy supports PHP, but could be wrong.

It supports several databases. I actually use PostgreSQL here. Much better than MySQL IMHO.

PHPPBB Setup

Post by String » Thu Oct 02, 2003 2:05 am

Thanks, all! I called GoDaddy for another reason and asked if PHP was supported. They said it runs on the domain but they don't support it technically. I'd have to go through other channels, which is fine by me.

Thanks to all who responded!!

I know on the host that I'm using, there's a button on the control panel that you click and boom, instant phpBB.

Drats!!

Post by String » Thu Oct 02, 2003 12:37 pm

Drats, drats, and double drats!!

I downloaded this, uploaded the directory exactly as it was installed on my harddrive, changed the config.php rights, tried installing it via the website and filling out the proper stuff....and it blew up on me. Kept say several properties could not be inserted.

Oh well, I'll try another day when my mind is fresher. I stayed up until 6 a.m. dinging around with this when I should have gone to bed 4 hours earlier. I am a computer geek....it's confirmed!!

Do you have a Web server installed locally? You could try installing the same versions of Apache and php and MySQL locally that they have there... you can do it on Windows, I've done it several times... and then get your setup working offline, and then you could transfer all the pieces over. It might be faster than trying to get it working online first! :?

No, I have it hosted at GoDaddy.com. I have it hosted and the domain there as well. I'll have to play around with it this weekend.

http://www.phpbb.com/... actually there's also a link at the bottom of every page. :)

String... what I meant was that you can replicate the setup on the computer at your own house, then get the setup and even config right if you want, without having to tie up your phone line for hours and hours trying to get it fixed. Then that (maybe) will transfer fairly painlessly to the server.

I saw some scripts on the phpBB site for transferring ezboard posts to a new phpBB installation... sounds tricky, but I thought I'd let you know it was there! I was thinking maybe we would want to do that here, but I don't know about you guys... I'm cool with just starting fresh!

Setting up locally

Post by String » Fri Oct 03, 2003 12:24 pm

The only thing I have locally is the stuff that was unzipped. I haven't tried it locally yet.

I have cable so it goes relatively fast anyway. I'll play around with it this weekend. If I start things during the week, I'll be up later then I should be.
