I posted this on another message board in response to someone who asked the age-old question, "What does Christmas mean to you?" I thought you guys would enjoy what I said, so I'm posting it here. I'm a known Pethead there, which is why the Petra disclaimer is in there...

You know... I'm a big Christmas fan (like 50 Christmas CDs, a Christmas tree in my office at work, etc.) and I was thinking a few years ago about something I heard about Petra (stick with me, because this is really about Christmas, not about Petra!) The songwriter for Petra said that they will probably never do a Christmas recording because they prefer to focus on Easter. Now don't get me wrong... the Resurrection is without a doubt the most important event in the history of mankind, but Easter is all about what God did for mankind when we couldn't do a thing to help ourselves. The Easter story is primarily for the unsaved. The Christmas story, however, is about a gift that God gave to us, true, but notice something... without the obedience of Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men, even the innkeeper... it couldn't have happened! Christmas is about God using His servants to get His will done. Mary was willing to carry Jesus despite the very real possibility of her being accused of being an adulteress; Joseph believed God's angel that Mary indeed was pregnant miraculously and not because she had been with someone else; the innkeeper, although the Bible doesn't say he heard directly from God, had a kind heart and opened his stable up to be the birthplace of the Son of God; the Wise Men followed an ancient prophecy and brought the gifts that financed Mary and Joseph's flight Egypt, saving Jesus' life when Herod would have killed Him.

Easter is about how we were helpless until God saved us.
Christmas is about how God allows us to be part of His plan to bring His kingdom to the world.
