I would have though streaming would have been a better source of income.

No way. Streaming means free. Anything digital means free at some point. Watch that 30 Seconds to Mars film. It is very telling at the end. The band was sued by EMI, had to pay for their own production, have yet to make a dime from any sales. They asked an arena of 25,000 people how many have downloaded the latest album for free from the web, instead of paying for it, and the whole place went crazy. The majority in the wide camera shot were raising their hands.

There is no incentive for anyone to record anything. The only reason is if you plan to tour and you need to give people another reason to come. This is why the legacy bands continue to tour with the same old set lists. It just doesn't matter. If Petra made a new record, it would probably sell 10k units, maaaaaaybe. The digital downloads would be stolen and around the world via bit torrent sites.

If John S. and John E. wanted to make a go of it, they would need to move to Europe, where the classic rock scene is very strong. New bands are breaking in that category. They ride the classic rock wave over there, do festivals, release new material, etc. John Elefante is every bid as much of Kansas as all of the other replacements in that band now, which is everyone except for the drummer and guitar player.

Maybe they should go back to LP only releases.

No one is making money streaming. The free model doesn't help artists. The free model with radio did, but now streaming is killing that, too.
