Re: 1982 - Petra Live in Atlanta

Looking at this and listening to the Audio from the 1979 concert where Greg X is singing and playing bass at the same time shows me how integral was Greg to the survival and success of Petra. If Greg wouldn't have stuck with Bob Petra would have disappeared by 1981. Greg even played guitar live and...

Re: Guitarist Discussion

J&H ... The production is better and more timeless than some of their albums frons the 80's/ early 90's imo That's because it's a recording of real musicians playing real instruments in a real studio. It doesn't have that artificial Elefante sound. It's very similar to Wake Up Call in that respect.

Re: Guitarist Discussion

While I love the solos guitar wise I really am sold on a guitarist with his rhythm chops; This is the reason why I love Bob Hartman's guitar work so much. Bob's rhythm playing is on par with most professionals out there. I will also say Bob doesn't get enough credit for his solos; most of his solos...

Re: Guitarist Discussion

However, if you have not heard a solo with more than four notes, you have either not listened a lot or not listened very carefully. Start at 1:10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCj0FRoc2Uk I was being somewhat tongue in cheek. I know that a lot of what he does is more complex than it sounds, but ...

Re: Guitarist Discussion

Keaggy ... His style however does not really work for me but that is a personal thing. What style? Keaggy's music is extremely diverse. It's one of the reasons he's never been a mainstay on any record label, because he would make a straight ahead rock n' roll album followed by an acoustic instrumen...

Re: Guitarist Discussion

Another great Angus quote when asked what it was like to be one of the best guitarists in the world: "I'm not even the best guitarist in AC/DC." I would agree with him on that. I really like his playing and while admitting that it is a lot harder to play his stuff than you would initially think in ...

Re: Guitarist Discussion

(a huge chunk of change for a high school kid working part-time at Kentucky Fried Chicken!). What is the grossest thing you witnessed at KFC? I watched a dude straight up sneeze into the flour as he was breading a batch of chicken. I actually saw a glob of phlegm shoot out of his mouth and into the...

Personally, I have a great fondness for Greg Bailey. He's one of "us": a guy that was a huge fan of Petra, got the opportunity of a lifetime, and has taken it and ran with it. I think his contributions to modern Petra are indispensable.
Yes, I agree. My comment was not intended as a sleight.

Re: New Petra Project

For me, the real band was John, Johnny, Bob, Ronny & Louie. There are two line-ups that I would classify as "real Petra": Greg Volz; Bob Hartman; John Slick; Mark Kelly; Louie Weaver and John Schlitt; Bob Hartman; John Lawry; Ronnie Cates; Louie Weaver I base this on the simple fact that no other l...

Re: New Petra Project

Although when you have a "revolving door band" like Petra, it's hard to say who the "real" band is.

Re: New Petra Project

I think the hardcore fans of any band are annoyed when there are hardly any original members on stage. There are still people who insist that Journey without Steve Perry isn't really Journey. The casual audience doesn't know the difference, of course.

Re: New Petra Project

Some bands bring one or more additional players when they are playing live. The Paul Coleman Trio had a permanent 4th member who played electric guitar in their live shows, but he was always in the background and never got a spotlight even during his solos, which I always found a little odd. I neve...
