What is Spotify? Free music-sharing site/software that takes away income from the band?

No, it's perfectly legal and Petra get payed every time a song gets played. Just like with radio. You can also buy mp3s there. Before, there was an account type where you could listen as much as you wanted for free but you had to listen to commercials in between songs. But they have recently removed that account type so that you only can listen to each song for free 5 times in total. Otherwise you have to pay a fee every month. I think it's a really bad thing that they have changed this. If commercials can pay for commercial radio, then why wouldn't it be able to pay for internet audio streams!?

Spotify has 7 million users in Europe and is planning to launch in USA this summer.

So how does a band get their music on there? Is it something like iTunes then?

Personally, I like this Live Cd from Classic Petra better than the Studio release. It's more powerful and better in many ways.
Anyway, I played the Live Release of Classic Petra in my Car today, and some friends of mine, who are not into Christian music at all, said: "What kind of 80's crap are this?
I told them it's a brand new release of a band called Petra, - but they told me they couldn't believe it. "No, It's to dated" they said.

Then I told them to wait a second, - and I turned on Jekyll&Hyde instead, and they said: "Wow, is this the same band? That's much better" Let's play than one instead!
"Who's singing?" they said? I told them it's John Schlitt singing. They had never heard of him before.

Now I am looking forward to a brand new rock CD from John Schlitt! That saves my day!
And as I am into 80's music, I am looking forward to the Classic petra show this summer as well! 8)

It goes through the record companies. I guess the difference from ITunes is that the main idea with Spotify is that you (as a paying member) can listen as much as you want without having to download anything or deciding which music you want to pay for. You can make your own playlists, so it's much like already having the music on your computer. You can for example make a playlist of all Petra records and then start to play it on shuffle play right away.

You can also add local mp3 files to your playlists.

I've never tried ITunes. I don't feel like installing an 80MB application from Apple just to be able to buy music...

So far, I think I will agree with you! It sounds better, especially mix/mastering wise.

Don't tell Bob, he might start foaming at the mouth if he knew you can listen to it for free... if you can hear it, you can record it!

Yes, I guess that will happen now when they have changed the free account so you only can listen to every song 5 times for free.

...and that will probably make the artists get less money as they get payed per play... So, not a wise decision from Spotify in my opinion.

I think they get more per play from paying members though...
