"Petra" & "Come and Join Us" Re-Re-Issued on CD
"Petra" & "Come and Join Us" Re-Re-Issued on CD
I am SO SORRY for not posting as often as I had....been very busy with work and helping my family.
I bet that you did not know this, but I got a heads up from the Petraspecive website that Petra's first two albums were recently re-re-issued on CD...this time those albums were released on ONE CD. The record company re-re-issued those albums was Wounded Bird Records and was released on October 18, 2011.
Has the two albums been released collectivelly before? Yes, in 1985, Word UK re-issued both albums on ONE CASSETTE. The difference...the "Come and Join Us" part. The Word UK Cassette went with the playing order that goes in line with the Word and Word/Epic CD releases. Here is what I am talking about:
01 God Gave Rock And Roll To You 5:37
02 Ask Him In 3:31
03 Sally 4:26
04 Without You 4:27
05 Come And Join Us 4:39
06 Where Can I Go 3:52
07 Holy Ghost Power 2:27
08 Woman Don't You Know 3:41
09 God Gave Rock And Roll To You (Reprise) 2:50
Here is what Wounded Bird Records did....
11 God Gave Rock And Roll To You 5:37
12 Holy Ghost Power 2:27
13 Woman Don't You Know 3:41
14 Sally 4:26
15 Come And Join Us 4:39
16 Where Can I Go 3:52
17 Without You 4:27
18 Ask Him In 3:31
19 God Gave Rock And Roll To You (Reprise) 2:50
Basically, they went in line with the ORIGINAL LP playing order...which I think is cool.
I also think that the tracks were remastered, giving the songs a cleaner sound.
There is only one set back...lyrics are included...but only the "Come and Join Us" lyrics are included. The lyrics for the self-titled debut is not included.
If you have not purchased the first two albums before....There is a chance to get them...in one package. It is well worth it. I do have some websites down below for you to check out:

This looks cool. It might be worth getting if its remastered.

Ditto. That would make a big difference for me. If it's just repackaging then I'd have no interest, but it's actually remastered, I'd be very interested. Is there anywhere that actually states these are remastered?

I see no evidence that its remastered; if it was it would be made clear.

It doesn't mention anything about remastering. I'm not sure if the original masters of these albums are still available somewhere. If so, the master for Come And Join Us should include Killing My Old Man. So since Killing My Old Man is not included, I can't imagine that the Come And Join Us is remastered. Maybe they mastered whatever source they used differently, but they didn't use the original master tapes (or whatever you call that).

No I didn't see anything saying it was remastered. However, I will add just because a never released track is not on a new CD does not mean it hasn't been remastered from the original source.p-freak wrote:It doesn't mention anything about remastering. However being that Word has went through so many changes over the last 25 years and being that Masters tapes like "Washes Whiter Than" have turned up on eBay after a Storage Cleaning, then it leaves little doubt that the Masters maybe sitting in a vault somewhere or a storage being paid for by Warner and may not see the light of day for some time, unless they feel that there is a big market for it to give it the attention we as fans would like to see it given......Record Label = It's about the Money.

Wow, I never heard about the master tapes showing up on eBay. That's pretty nuts.

That master tape was only for half of the album. It had the songs Morning Star, Deep Love, Magic Words, Magic Mirror and Without You. It was a 32 track tape which I'm told was a very odd format and would now be almost impossible to play. I didn't buy it (nobody placed a bit on that auction) cause shipping would have been much too expensive and it was as good as unusable, even if it would have been preserved perfectly. Maybe now I think I should have, because it certainly was an interesting piece of Petra history.

Sell an obscure and unplayable format and claim that it's some rare lost master recording. Sounds like the perfect scam.

Hey guys,
I got this reply from Wounded Bird Records:

All of our CDs are remastered,
but there is no strict definition of the term "remastered",
we do something different on each master we work on.

Re: "Petra" & "Come and Join Us" Re-Re-Issued on CD
Ok, there is some confusion about what was sold and what is called a master.
The Master is the two-track, (1/4"or 1/2" tape back then) with all of the songs mixed, in order, with the appropriate test tones for alignment and calibration on the front end. Many of these Masters to the Petra catalog do exist. Some of the early ones do not.
When digital hit the scene, the first masters were on video tape (1630). Studios either mastered directly to the 1630, or the analog tape was transferred to the 1630 by the mastering engineer. Often, DATs were used in the studio in place of analog tape. DATs had to be transferred to 1630. EMI had all of these, I was told.
What was found was an incomplete 2" multi-track tape. The songs were not complete because the sister reel is missing. You would have to have both reels, playing on both machines, synchronized via SMPTE or whatever house reference they were using. The tape format was a new proprietary thing that never made it on the market. So playing them is an impossibility. On top of that, the tapes would have to be baked in a tape oven (or low-temp convection oven), and then transferred to another tape, because the tape was improperly stored, plus the binder (glue that holds the magnetized rust particles) would have been super dry. Tapes not stored in a proper tape vault are generally worthless. Sometimes, properly stored tapes have issues. This is why there is such a big move to protect historical media, transferring to redundant drives.

Wouldn't they need permission to do this Brent?pethead97 wrote:Hey guys,

Yes, they would need to license the Masters. I don't see why these guys would be allowed to do this when the albums offered are still available from the owner....whomever that is nowadays. They would have paid a fee to have a copy of the master made (they are not allowed the actual master itself), then would have to pay a royalty on units pressed, not shipped. They get their money on the front side.

I'm thinking none of these are remastered, it doesn't make any sense.brent wrote:Yes, they would need to license the Masters.
