I believe this question was put to Bob Hartman some time back, and as I recall he said that apart from an odd unfinished demo or two, everything Petra ever recorded is available commercially. And even as successful as they were, I don't think they had the financial luxury of recording several albums worth of material and then paring it down to a single album for release. Everything they recorded got put on a record and sold because they literally couldn't afford not to.

In a live situation there's a lot of things going on and it's hard to focus on details, and the show and the energy just keeps everything going. So the fact that it sounded good doesn't mean a recorded version of it would be as impressive. I guess we've all had experiences of something that worked while we listened to it, while a recording of it just didn't really make the same impression. I'm not talking about a difference between good and bad in this case. I'm taking about the live thing being slightly inferior but to an extent that shows what tricks were used in the studio.
That's assuming they wouldn't have gone back to the live recording to "spice up" the sound, which they totally would have. Very few live albums are 100% live, even the ones that claim to be.

Point missed; maybe I'm not being clear, I'm not sure. I'm talking about the songs that are written and actually recorded or not in I guess like a demo setting, not the finished product that is ready to be labeled, copyrighted, and pushed on the album. Those songs are there and sitting in Bob's basement somewhere. All established artists bring anywhere from 15-20 songs to a recording session to hand over to the producer; keep in mind that most of these songs are not the finished product, but are finished enough to give the producer the idea or message behind the song. No artist goes into a studio thinking these are the 10 songs that will make it on the album.
Def Leppard has a whole album(Retro Active) dedicated to these types of songs, which actually became a Gold album for them; It would be nice if Petra did something like that. In Petra's case there are 2 songs off of JAH and also "Too Big Too Fail" could fall into this catagory; these 3 songs were written sometime in the late 90's.

I see what you mean. I thought you were talking about completed songs that were "left on the studio floor", as the saying goes.

Well, since the next album is going to feature new songs, I have a feeling Bob dug into his filing cabinet to pull out some gems that he never had a chance to record until now.

I would love to hear some of these tunes with John fronting the ones that were meant for him and Greg fronting the ones for him. I do believe this album would sell if everything was right in the production & marketing area.

Of course there is. Not much, but this is the pro-shot stuff that I have:

http://www.petrafiles.com/petraspective ... petra.html

http://www.petrafiles.com/petraspective ... petra.html

http://www.petrafiles.com/petraspective ... petra.html

I could try and upload some of it if there's any interest. Most of it already is on youtube.

I also got a few audience audio recordings, but those are not the best quality ever.
Oh wow I am so looking for material from that era. I would be very interested in "21-July-1991, PETRA Live @ The Palace, Detroit, MI" and the norway-gig from 09. March 1991. In the forum christianconcertsarchive there was one who had a Allies-Recording from that time. I have a recording of Allies in Germany, but only a few songs and not the best quality.

In August/September I'll have a much faster internet connection and I'm planning to store my Petra audio/video archive online. I'm not going to post links at random and the files will be password protected. I'll either dig up this thread around then or make a new one and then anyone can PM me and I can send you links and password info. So just hang in there for a while.
