I agree with him about the aristry section. They did make 3 minute radio friendly songs. Where are the solos? Where is the "extra stuff" they used to throw it? Why no extended stuff in the background? Why only 10 songs?

The review!

Post by Petranut » Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:36 am

First, let me state that I LOVE Jekyl and Hyde. It is a great album that I have been waiting for years for since I got hooked on Petra when PP2 came out. All their hard stuff had already been done.
Anyway this guy does have one valid point that I agree with. Petra didn't stretch it with this album. It is wonderfully filled with what they can do but nothing really new or pioneering in my view.
Again it is the best they have done in 10 years and I love it and it is my favorite but it would be nice if the next one stretched them abit into the pioneering stage again.

This guy is NOT a Pethead!!

I was in the Christian book store today and they had a list of the top 30 albums for Nov and JAH is # 30. Not to shabby for a CD that so many said would go nowere.

It was from some music thing I don't rember, but the boys said it was rad.
( I think that is good)

That guy would have given a bad review no matter what the CD sounded like to him, according to his first sentence.

welcome to the zone Brian. This must be your first time, we hope you don`t think we are all a bunch or weird people.

there was a pethead here before called Brian like you. He is so popular that he never posts. Glad we got rid of him  we hope you enjoy your time here and if you are not on my birthday list drop me a line

Ya know guys, dogs yell because there`s people getting in town (please don`t ask me to explain tmy mexican places). People have started to talk about the album, that`s a grea thing, it means it is good enough to get people`s attention, even if that guy talked bad about the album, somehow, he is promoting the album, `cause then some people will wanna know how terrible the album is so they will go and listen and realize that this guy was going through a "male certain time of da month".

From this reviewer's opening statements, he probably wouldn't have liked any new CD with Petra's name on it.

Chuckle & Hide

Post by Michael » Thu Nov 20, 2003 8:26 am

I'd have to take Petra's side on this one... they've tried the "let's make a new sound that we think everybody will like" thing, and it just didn't work. The music is great, I don't mean it didn't work from that standpoint... but from a marketing standpoint, it didn't sell. This one is back to basics, and it's been selling like anything, at least compared to their last 5-10 years or so of output. I'm not sure what people really expect when they say things like "artistic growth" or whatever; rock and roll is rock and roll, and sometimes the simplest stuff (say, a really LOUD riff with someone singing the same phrase over and over) works the best for a rock and roll song. In my opinion, what makes Christian Rock just that, Christian Rock, is lyrics that bring you closer to Jesus married to music that you can enjoy from a rock & roll standpoint.

very true Mike...

I was always baffled when reviewers would diss Petra comparing the whole "artistic" thing with bands like Sixpense or Jars of Clay. I would always think "if they want to here music like Sixpense and Jars, what the heck are they listening to Petra for anyway?" I think a lot of the CCM people have no clue what real rock-n-roll is. I can say pretty confidentally that if it weren't for the christian lyrics, secular ROCK stations would love this album. Just like the reviewer from Barnes & Noble said, this is a great rock album! Peace all!!

well...
first i'd like to thank you all for reading my review...
also, i'd like to thank those of you who kept a level head and didn't call me names...

i'd like to think that the whole of my reviews would justify or at least clarify why Jekyll and Hyde landed the score that it did...

and, i'm open to discuss to some degree some of the thoughts surrounding the concept of "artistry"...

i'll be back in a bit to address some of the other comments in this thread...

i'm on the road at this moment..

peace . . .
love . . .

Top 10

Post by SamScales » Thu Nov 20, 2003 1:21 pm

Pethead1,

I was in Cedar Springs Christian Store here in Nashville last week and for November JAH was #10 on their list. They have it nicely displayed with the "Best 10" on their wall.

Opinions are like some things! Everyone has one! This kinda stuff is not worth talking about, and Jerry Springer might have a spot for him on his show.

Review

Post by jasonf » Thu Nov 20, 2003 9:12 pm

That review certainly was one sided.
He obviously doesn't like Petra's music style.
I had a further look into the website and there was no contact email address.Obviously they do not want any feedback on their comments.
Pity About that.I was going to reply to his review.
Anyway I Love Petra and will never stop listening to them.
God Bless
Jason
