Re: Angel of Light and Grave Robber Now Added to Samples
My objections were never based on people liking John over Greg, they were based the bashing of Greg and I am far from the only person who's noticed it or who complained about it. By the way, I'm not directing this at Timbo. These issues have been going on for a long time.

This is what I see as well. And Timbo you’re ok don’t worry about it.
It’s amazing how people get some idea in there head that some riff has to be started between John and Greg. Some people have to dream up some imaginary idea that John and Greg sit on their butts all days thinking they are the better singer of Petra.
Somehow they have come up with the idea that because Greg left and John joined that somehow John would feel let down and hurt if all the sudden Bob wanted to do a tour with Greg, Why?
Albeit it may not matter, I’m still puzzled as to why people throw their emotions into something so much that they want John to be hurt and feel bad so much so they can pat him on the back and say “there, there it’s ok, we understand”
I would imagine John is probably more excited about the chance to concentrate on his Solo stuff more now than ever. I mean Sue even said he’s thinking about a new Rock Album. John needs more solo stuff out, John needs to be creative with no limitations and get outside the standard Petra block. It’s called growth, it’s called achieving new goals in life. So get over it people, it’s absolutely ok for Greg and Bob and Classic Petra to do what they are doing, they didn’t ask your opinion so deal with it.

Actually, hardly anyone has bashed Greg. That's why I'm saying you've been overly sensitive. You have jumped down anyone's throat who has even mentioned that they like John better, because that is somehow Greg bashing to you. Passive aggressive statements like "you can hate the new album all you want, but I'm going to enjoy listening to it" or "I think people made up their mind about the album before it was even released" imply that people are just hating because Greg is on it, when all I've seen is people expressing personal opinion based on the actual music. I am definitely not someone who has a huge preference for John over Greg, but when I critically listen to the samples, I just don't think they're that great. It has nothing to do with John or Greg, and none of the responses I've seen to the samples indicates that it's about John and Greg for anyone else either.Preacherman777 wrote:My objections were never based on people liking John over Greg, they were based the bashing of Greg and I am far from the only person who's noticed it or who complained about it. After listening to the samples IMO the three stars of this album are going to be....
1. Bob with his blazing guitar work
2. Louie and how he actually gets to play. On the drum side it sounds like a live Petra show from the past.
3. The actual songs themselves.

To me John sounds today like a screeching old machine. Sadly, he hurt his voice singing to the top of his range. Since 2001 it had been painful tio hear him sing and sad as well. He sounds winded, and can not reach the notes, sounding out of key at the end of each line. Just read the magazines reviews on Farewell.

Unfortunately, I don't think certain people here have any interest in chilling. They have me in their target and they are out for blood, but sadly, in reality, they just keep missing the point. Therefore, I'm not going to play the game anymore. You can take all the shots at me you like, but from now on I will be turning the other cheek.

Re: Angel of Light and Grave Robber Now Added to Samples
Changing the subject back to the CP stuff...
I think this album has more in common with Whitecross's "Nineteen Eighty Seven" album - the music is modernized and beefed up, and usually a step lower due to a much older singer - although IMHO GXV's voice has aged much better than Scott Wenzel's. Also, IIRC on "1987" Rex Carroll duplicated most of the lead guitar note for note - it was louder and more aggressive, but the exact same leads. On BTTR, Bob has obviously taken a lot of liberty with the lead guitar, and even the rhythm riffs have been beefed up and doubled in some places.
What do you guys think? Valid comparison?
<EDIT> Didn't finish my thought - got off track about guitars (being a guitarist, easy to do). Whitecross's "1987" contains new versions of WC's classic songs, and they are essentially unchanged - the sound is, as I said before, a bit heavier and more "modern" sounding as far as effects and such, and most of the songs are key'ed lower, but the melody and basic structure of the music is the same. No major timing changes or new melodies or harmonies. I actually found the newer versions to occasionally be more enjoyable than the originals, but that's always subjective. Anyways, My basic thought is that BTTR has more in common with "1987" than with, say, "Double Take".
On that note, maybe it's better that CP didn't revamp the songs drastically. At least last time it didn't work out so well...

Haven't heard 1987 so I'll have to take your word for it, but I definitely agree with what you said about Back to the Rock.

Agree completely with the 1987 comparison. I loved that album, and based on what I've heard so far, I'm really going to love this. I think tuned-down guitars and less high-pitched vocals are more in line with my musical taste.

THANK YOU PREAHCERMAN777 for posting these rough-ups of the upcoming new CP album! I really appreciate it!
I am amazed at how good Greg's voice sounds...still! He and John have such disparate vocal styles - it's apples and oranges, as we all know. I always preferred John to Greg. However, I LOVE the Voltz era Petra, too. And I can't wait to get the new album.
I am also VERY interested in a live show. I was expecting a publishing of some tour dates before now. Any word on when dates will be made public?
PS: I have long believed that it's Bob's song writing and dedication to message purity that made Petra so effective and influencial. I know many of you agree. I thank God that Bob chose to stay committed to the goal of setting scripture to music. Oh, how Petra's music has ministered to me for so many years!

Re: Angel of Light and Grave Robber Now Added to Samples
I don't think it is really hitting the high notes, it's more or less roughing his voice all these years. So when he does hit those high notes it's not as smooth. Greg has never been a rough singer, he's been a smooth singer and even though he can't sing as high he can still sing pretty dang high and still smooth. To me John sounds today like a screeching old machine. John sounds great when he is singing those low notes, he might just need to lower his keys on his songs a bit, nothing wrong with that. You know a lot of the great vocalists like Michael English, David Phelps etc have vocal coaches when they go through rough spots, Michael is using one now since he had that surgery on his neck. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Christian Rock singers to use the help of vocal coaches to keep everything in as good as shape as it can be. Plus as said in another thread John is not really in shape and has put some weight on and that's not downing him in anyway, but it is a fact that if you are not healthy it will affect your voice.
