ANY WORD?
Re: ANY WORD?
Bottom line is still money. Money is almost always the bottom line in booking. either on the bands side, promotors side or both. Regardless of how many or few shows have been booked it always comes back to the money. Classic Petra IMO is wanting too much money for their 1 hour (approx. I had to add that so i don't get flamed over a little technicality in case they play 1 hour and 32 seconds) show. Now if they don't want to budge on asking price thats up to them and I think they should do that if they want it is certainly within their rights. I have waited for a LONG TIME for the 40+ US dates to be added. I have asked once a month about it and still no movement on what i am now kindly calling the "Magical Mystery US Tour". I have waited for the DVD and thank goodness it sounds like it is coming but man if they can't move any faster on the DVD then waht they have then I am wondering if a 40+ US tour will ever happen as originally envisioned or announced. I know many will agree and disagree and I am still cautiously optimistic that a date will be added within reasonable drive time distnace from me.
Now for a cheap shot just for cheap shots sake. LONG LIVE JOHN SCHLITT!!!! I'm hoping he will do a version of the Friday, Friday Friday song. It will make Volz writing sound so much better. OUCH!!!! (That was an advance response to the heat i'm sure to feel from the responses to this post)

This is why selling music must come back around and be the main support mechanism for artists. Exponentially more people listen personally than attend concerts. Less than 1% of downloads sold by the big three last year were Christian.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been listening to Unfit for Swine alot this week. LOVE it! I like it alot better now than when it came out. It doesn't even sound outdated to me, but what do I know - I hardly ever listen to new music (except Mechanism, of course). What's the Friday, Friday Friday song?

Re: ANY WORD?
Last fall and winter management was telling promoters that it would be about a 70 minute show; they would play all the songs off of BTTR only and have some in between talk. I would assume that now that could change because they have more material worked out, but haven't heard anything different.petraman wrote:Why are they only doing a 1 hour show?
With the way this management is working out I would think the cost would go up for a longer show which in turn could be a problem.

Re: ANY WORD?
Comparing them to other non a-list bands, it is very common to have 60 minute shows with 15 minutes allotted for encore. It is most generally a logistical thing. Can't speak for the cost of the show. I have not heard lately.

Brent, the last line of your quote really disturbs me in light of my own personal experieces with the generation just now graduating from high school. I've just finished a two year involvement with a competitive "Christian" homeschool high school athletic program. Two years ago I thought this would be a great thing to get my daughter involved in. Before this year I was convinced by leadership things were going to get better. In both cases I was seriously wrong.brent wrote:This is why selling music must come back around and be the main support mechanism for artists. The kids involved in this program came from varied evangelical backgrounds but the vulgarity seemed to be very consistent across the board. Your statement reminded me of the fact that, with a few exceptions, these kids are not listening to anything Christian. It was disheartening to listen to young me who claimed to believe in Christ justify why their Ipods were filled with the likes of Eminem. One young man who wants to date my daughter just posted a Dubstep song on his facebook site that is nothing but the electronic mixing of women making orgasmic sounds. Anyone close enough to the court to see faces, hear voices and read lips could see what kinds of things were coming out of these boys mouths during our games, even from the leaders kids.
The young girls, on the other hand, having grown up with a steady diet of Disney level love stories where the parents are always stupid and kids know what they really need, they're mostly listening to country love songs, lusting after relationships the way young boys are lusting after their bodies. Combine the two and you have a recipe for disaster.
So at the end of the day, I've got to believe that the reason why only 1% of downloads are from christian artists is not primarily because of a lack of good christian music available, but because that vast majority of young people in evangelical churches don't care anything about content. Eventually, if not already, they won't care anything about Christ.
I live in the Atlanta area and I know parents from other churches are seeing the same thing. We're also seeing absolutely explosive pregnancy rates among high school girls in evangelical churches. Is anyone else seeing this in their area?

Bform so sad to hear this, I had some idea that it was getting this way. As I am not a parent as yet, but am hoping to be in a few years to be, it really puts me of the idea of having kids from a selfish point of view that I just will hate to see them go through this kind of stuff that has become the norm.BForm wrote:Brent, the last line of your quote really disturbs me in light of my own personal experieces with the generation just now graduating from high school. I really feel kids listen to secular music, because the Christian bands these days are either Hillsong/love songs, or heavy rock that has at the end of the day nothing to do with Christianity, like one band I saw on JCTV they were getting tattoos and smoking.. this is why Petra was so important growing up for most of us, the backstage pass video show that you can be cool and be awesome Christian at the same time, it's so sad that these too don't mix anymore.
Wouldn't it be cool, if there was a band like Petra for our kids generation....

Re: ANY WORD?
I believe the reason kids listen to secular music is that their parents listen to it or at least leave their old collection out in the open for their kids to see. It doesn't totally make the difference but it does soften the debate. There is this whole attitude among people that I know, Christian people, that would rather listen to Classic Rock than Christian music of any kind, ie Christian music is looked down on. Then, when the kids get to school, ALL of their friends listen to it. But, I think it starts in the home.

The explanation doesn't cut it with me. A parent that listens to Cream or Journey will lead to a child listening to Eminem?pmal wrote:I believe the reason kids listen to secular music is that their parents listen to it or at least leave their old collection out in the open for their kids to see. Re: ANY WORD?
I am not the norm because I actually like multiple genres of music, even those my parent liked. They might have just been cool enough to be into the coolest music, but I don't think so
.
I saw my friends make musical choices based on environment, trends, rebellion, limited exposure/lack of cultural information, drugs, etc. Today, most parents are not hands on raising their kids and actually have very little exposure to them compared to time spent at school, watching TV, etc. Kids will follow what they are lead to follow, plain and simple. This is why the bible says to train them up when they are young. As they get older, they search for their own identity and their own ways. If those things are not based in God and Godly music, then you can forget it. The AVERAGE person comes to Christ before the age of 18, according to many studies. You would think that the AVERAGE person would have a grasp on Christian music by 18. They don't. You are right. It is all about education by the parents, which gets back to my often quoted fact: most Christians do not listen to Christian music. The kids will go wild with whatever the parents allowed in moderation.
We should be willing to accept the fact that children do not have the same ideas, preferences and identities as their parents. They will find an art form that suites them. There is nothing wrong with this. So, I don't have a problem that my kids are drawn to a Christian band playing the Warped tour instead of Bill Gaither Reunion shows, or Petra...same thing.
