My sentiments exactly Daniel. Can you imagine what the next few years might have brought if JAH was released in place of DT? It would have set them on a course that would not have included Revival, which was even worse in my opinion. I don't think I've listened to Revival since the year it came out. JAH, on the other hand, keeps finding it's way back into the rotation.Daniel wrote:I do like some of DT, but it was a sad waist of a major record label really.. imagine if that was JAH on Word around 2000?

I think there are some legitimately good songs on DT that would be fairly popular here if 1. They hadn't been remakes of beloved hard rock songs or 2. Been performed by someone else.
But it's really hard to separate those out. Why listen to the DT version of a Petra song, no matter how objectively good it might be, when you like the original version better?

Revival, while the weakest of the Petra Praise albums, was still miles ahead of some of the other worship albums that flooded shelves around the same time. "Jesus, Friend of Sinners" and "The Noise We Make" both still get played quite a bit around here.
I think maybe I could have enjoyed DT if it wasn't billed as Petra, but as an "acoustic tribute" or something. I mean, some of the tribute/cover versions of songs have been WAY different from Petra's originals, and yet I've still liked them. (The Sixpence version of "Road to Zion" comes to mind.)

The Pete Orta Song, one of my favorites. I like most songs of this album. How can someone say it´s not Petra? It was Petra who recorderd these songs, it was Petra who re-arranged the songs. There is a PETRA-Album which I don´t like at all and thats "No doubt". I heard them live at the "No doubt-Tour", that was really bad. I don´t like the album at all. Same gies with God fixation and Revival. Three Records that are in my opinion "Albums the world doesn´t need"...SCJ-7 wrote:rexreed wrote:

Well, the answer is... yes.
I really like Dance, Praying Man, Judas Kiss, This Means War and Creed...
I like (well, more or less) the other songs...
And the Pete Orta song???... I don't like it...
But I still go with albums like Jekyll & Hyde, Beyond Belief, On Fire, Wake Up Call and More Power To Ya... That's the real PETRA!

Well, different strokes for different folks, I guess. While _No Doubt_ was kind of a weak album, I enjoyed the tour. Not arena-thundering rock, but a decent show nonetheless.DeSoto wrote:The Pete Orta Song, one of my favorites. I like most songs of this album. How can someone say it´s not Petra? I've never particularly cared for _God Fixation_, but it does have a couple of decent songs. The title track came up on my iPod the other day; pretty catchy bass riff.
I think my biggest problem with DT was the fact that the sound no longer matched the lyrics. "This Means War!" and "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered", as originally recorded, are massive, thundering, war-cry songs. The DT versions feel weak, by comparison. It's as if the warrior decided to run home to Mommy.
It also felt like change simply for the sake of change. I recently listened to all the albums in chronological order. You can hear the "Petra sound" throughout all of them. Despite their differences, they all "sound like Petra." DT, at least to my ears, does not. Even the II Guys album sounds more like a Petra album than DT.
My view, of course; YMMV.
