Hey Sue, has John seen this video and what does he think looking at it now? I'm sure he had never seen it before.

We may start to lose our way in the search to find our worth
Our value comes in the fact we live

No, he hasn't seen it (John download something on the computer? you got to be kidding!), but I did tell him we have it. He remembered that show - and didn't think he was that good on it! I told him he had to be kidding me! whoa... but I forgot to say anything about the white tails.
Now really - on the interview John said he never wore anything funky, like the fatigues. He wore rock 'n roll clothes.
I have seen tails on other rockers - Rick Florian wore black tails in 1994 at a Whiteheart concert I went to. Black tails, white fluffy shirt... (or should I say 'puffy shirt' for you Seinfeld fans?).
White, black, tails, hightops, sneakers, whatever - they both rocked, man.

John said he didnt think he was that great! HA HA HA!!! Tell him to watch it!! He was totally on!!
I thought the tails were kinda cool! Steve Perry was another rocker that wore the tails and it became a trademark of his.

Your love came down.... and it saved me.... it saved MAaAaAaAaAYYYYY Yeah !!!!!
Well I can understand why John would say something like that. Your always your own worst critic but that show was awsome. I will say this though I think when Petra started to play John's songs instead of just greg's it seems the band got bigger in that the sound and the presentation. I don't know if I'm explaining myself right but even though John was in this concert it still sounded like Greg's Petra. I think John's petra sounded bigger, fuller and much rockier if that makes sense. I really have to wonder what Petra would have been if John hadn't joined them and Greg had stayed. I think that John is the addition that really pushed Petra through the roof it was just that voice and his personality that just rocketed petra to a different level. I think it's that they seemed even more professional. It is neat to see where john started. If you want to see what I mean watch this video with john again then go and watch athe show in detroit on trodland's site and you see what I mean.

Skim forward about one minute into this video for a pretty nattily-dresed David Lee Roth.Schlittism33 wrote:I thought the tails were kinda cool! Steve Perry was another rocker that wore the tails and it became a trademark of his.

Keep in mind that Petra always sort of metamorphosed to sound like what was going on at the time. The No Doubt Petra sounds almost nothing like the Back to the Street Petra, if you haven't noticed. Also understand that Beat the System was apparently supposed to be some kind of crossover thing, and that the music was supposed to be modern futuristic kind of stuff (translation: in later years it began to sound pretty dated!) so it has that kind of thin buzzy synthesizer guitar sound throughout. Although I have read that Petra thickened out their sound to match John's voice, if you listen to the old Head East stuff, it sounds a lot more like Not Of This World than On Fire!.WR1U wrote:I will say this though I think when Petra started to play John's songs instead of just greg's it seems the band got bigger in that the sound and the presentation. Point being... I think Petra would have gone with the Def Leppard sound anyway if the Elefantes were producing them. Because everyone produced by the Elefantes in that era sounded like Def Leppard. Check out the Mastedon albums (both are personal John/Dino solo projects) if you don't believe me.

audio
Just give me a day or two, and I will put up an audio mp3 320kbit version of this concert from the original DVD source!
But remember - the cam was stopped in some places, and I can do nothing about that!

Spanish translator?
Is there anyone here who can translate into Spanish the newsletter I have up on John's site talking about the 1986 video? http://johnwschlitt.com/fans/newsletter.htm
I really want to send this out, but Elo, our little Mexican interpreter, seems to have disappeared.
If you can help - let me know! Or post the translation here and I'll grab it.

I guess I'll go for an 192kbit LAME 3.97 codec version.
File size is around 113mb and running time is 82:37
Some Sonic noise reduction have been added, by using Sound Forge.

I'm so glad to have this piece of Petra history. It's really cool to see how John started. I guess, however, unlike everyone else here, I can see why John feels it wasn't his best. I think the first song sounded really rough, especially that opening scream, but he did get better for the most part after the first song. There were still some songs that sounded a little rough, but I don't blame John for that. This wasn't his music after all and he was new. Every time I've seen them live over the years and heard John do old Greg songs, I felt he struggled a bit with most of them, though the ones they did on pretty regular basis such as Judas Kiss, he got better on those. The problem wasn't all about John either. I think it was obvious they were not yet used to doing harmonies with John, as the harmonies were not very tight and at times were down right off.
The transition had to be difficult when they only had Greg's songs. Greg's vocals are very different from John's. The dynamics, the range are all very different and those old songs were written for a range that could jump from low to very high in the blink of an eye, not to mention every place in between. John was built more for high intensity, high end vocals and not for depth of range. Once they started writing for his strengths it made a world of difference.
But having said all of that, it's the weaknesses about this performance just as much as the strengths that make it a classic. We get to see how they grew and improved from this early stage to one of the best bands to ever grace the face of Christian rock.
