Did you accidentally visit a "Barney Sings" website? This and other complaints stun me... I think I joined the wrong board... Should this be renamed thejohnzone for all the johnheads?

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Angel of Light is the best track hands down.
I have heard it all now.. I am disappearing until the album comes out.

I would love to do an album for John. If I had the cash, I would cover it just for kicks. That would be a true dream. He would hate me by the end of it though. But, that is how many of the greatest albums were made, with tension between the producer/engineer and the artist.

btw, I would not be saying anything about Johns engineering chops. He normally mixes very clean.

Got this in my email today, I was told it was being mastered tomorrow. I think it was an automatic email since the responce had nothing to do with my question. This is the full track by the way.

I noticed the same thing, but this is a premastered version and good mix engineers dont send ME stuff thats already compressed like this. I think they boosted the signal and put a master limiter on there just to get the volume up for these demos. If they really are that squished....I won't be able to listen to the record.
I can point to hundreds of records where "good" engineers did pre smash mixes, because the artist wanted it this way. Ever hear of Metalica? Their last one was a good example. It was so smashed that the mastering engineer declined to master it because he did not want his name on it. There was nothing he could do with a pre smashed mix. It happens every day. Once something is compressed and the waveforms have been normalized and squared off, there is no changing it.

John Lawry recorded and mixed the whole thing in his studio.
Yea well, it becomes a sort of semantical argument, but I would say they arent good mixing engineers in that case. In cases where the artists are just retards... well I was kind of assuming Petra wouldn't be in that number. I can't stand "modern" production because of the over-compression, everything is forward in the mix, and an overall "sterile" feeling to the mixes. But just looking at the RMS and peak levels on this tracks, if these are the tracks sent for mastering, then its a poor job done by John L.
I do like what they're doing with the songs, and Greg's voice sounds great!

However, something that I noticed right away like these other folks: the compression. The proof will be if I can listen to the whole record without feeling anxiety and headachy.

Rush made this mistake with their Vapor Trails album. The dynamic range compression makes it unlistenable for more than a few songs--and I like the songs! When I first got the album, I couldn't understand why I was getting so annoyed and antsy listening to it when I liked the music so much. And then other fans started saying the same thing...

Why are there so many Greg haters here? This sounds incredible. Maybe we should have The Schitt Zone and The Volz Zone so everybody is happy.

I guess this answers the question of "would anything be leaked this time?"

No, it will be mastered tomorrow.

Here is the email I got today
It is the original line up from the 80’s when they were an arena size show, which we are planning again. We will be mastering the new record tomorrow at Abbey Road Studios, so will have the record available for the fans in less than a week. Attached a tune that has to have a final mix and mastering, but will give you an idea of the band’s new sound with the old classics.

Best,

Michael

If they are mastering at Abby Road, this is gonna sound awesome.
Abby Road still masters with their original analog mastering deck that they used back during the 60s. They used it to remaster all the Beatles stuff that was re-issued last year.

OK, I like 'em. I take it for what it is. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new songs; not so much the re-do's, but the new versions of Bema Seat and Adonai have a nice sound to them. I wish they'd done Chameleon on the album, though.... that song can really rock given the modern treatment.

Oh, yeah, and I, too, am hoping the new Schlitt album pans out... best of both worlds that way.

Actually, AR masters from whatever you send them. They still have old machines, but you have to send them analog masters, usually 1/4 two-track (Ampex 102s, etc). Knowing John Lawry, they were likely mixing down to digital.
