It's weird if anyone said this about Greg right now they would blasted to kingdom come and back.

Crap, I just hope to be walking upright, breathing without an oxygen mask and tank. If I can sing at their age, I will be happy. I would be happy to sing as well as they do now, at my age.

same Brent... some people at 60 are in a real bad state! Both John & Greg sound great... Axl Rose is in his 40's and ohh man he sounds bad.

Axl never had any real talent to stand on. Slash made that band, and it's sad Axl couldn't see that.

Re: Angel of Light and Grave Robber Now Added to Samples
Anyone hear Glenn Kaiser recently? That guy really lost his mojo as far as vocals, IMHO. Not a huge fan of his, but since we're talking about old vocalists...
Scott Wenzel of Whitcross (for those who haven't heard them, I'd say his range is actually similar to Michael Sweet's, except that Scott used an aggressive rasp through his entire range, instead of the more occasional scream from Sweet) has aged worse than John, but that rasp voice just doesn't seem to age well for anyone. Actually John has surprised me with some of his performances since Petra's retirement - every once an awhile he seems to have a good night and roars back like he's 25 years younger. I prefer to judge him by those ocassions...
But I'll admit that often he comes across a little weak sounding, at least to those of us who remember the old days.
But like Brent said, it's not like my voice at 21 can match his at 60!
Volz voice has aged much better since his style was never very harsh (I'm guessing - I'm no doctor). But I (rightly) assumed we'd see some key changes on this album.
Loving it anyways!

Yeah, I gotta say, that was a little harsh. I mean I know maybe you're feeling the need to react to all the bashing Greg's been taking, but that's not the way to do it. If you had just said you didn't feel John's voice had aged well it would be one thing, but just as the other side has said a lot of things to bait those of us who support Greg, this could most certainly be taken as bait as well, so just let me encourage you not to play that game. Be the better man and let your words be words of grace and not insult. To me John sounds today like a screeching old machine. Sadly, he hurt his voice singing to the top of his range. I did not mean to insult, I just feel he should stop hurting himself singing rock music and maybe join the Gaither Vocal Band like Russ Taff did with success. I love John and am proud of what he did with Petra. When Greg left he became my hero through my college years and I was always comparing, and was proud he could match and exceed my expectations in term of range and vocal prowess. But now it really makes me sad when he tries and sounds gasping for air, and falls short of the key at the ends of song lines. He had even stopped singing at one time to catch his breath. That my honest assessment.

That's ok man your entitled to an opinion, and as an MD you know the effects of strains on the vocal chords so it's a valid point.fcollazo wrote:I did not mean to insult, I just feel he should stop hurting himself singing rock music and maybe join the Gaither Vocal Band like Russ Taff did with success. In some ways I think John sounds better now then back in the day. Go put on some ear phones, close your eyes and put Farewell on and listen to the Rock Block and JAH. You will hear a great sounding voice especially on Mine Field, Think Twice, and This Means War! If you listen closely you can hear some Brian Johnson from AC/DC in there.
John and Greg both have aged but I think they both still sound quite good for their age and catagories in music.

If you're suggesting I see the Zone as a game you're way off base. I'm the one saying let's not play these games.I would encourage you to not see the zone as a game my dear friend.

It's just a matter of preference. I love J&H, it's one of my very favorite Petra songs, and he sounds great in the concert videos from that time. I also really like Farewell - I like Dance better on Farewell than the original. Some people just don't like the raspy rock sound....I LOVE it!!!!

Re: Angel of Light and Grave Robber Now Added to Samples
I'll admit John sounded a lot better on J&H then he did on Farewell. But the main problem with Farewell was that it was a bad mix to begin with. I don't think Jim Cooper really did Petra Justice and I'm pretty shocked that inpop would have put something out that sounded like that. There is just toooo much wrong with that Live recording.

John may have lost a little from his younger days, but he still sounds pretty darn good. The same could be said for Greg and Michael Sweet and many others.
