I always thought that the Beatles were overrated. As James Bond said in Goldfinger, ""My dear girl there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Pérignon '53 above a temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!" However, Bob gives them credit for the style of music that Petra has played over the years during his interview on the Today's Christian Music radio special in 2002, when they did the unplugged set of music with Louie in the studio not playing the drums, and they were asked how Petra's music had remained relevant. (I can attach the mp3 if anyone wants me to). So, I have to respect what they did.

No one person can play a Beatles song. You might be able to step through the chord progression of some of their popular tunes, but there was a real craft to what they did in the studio. While it might sound mundane now in an era where multi-track mixing and digital effects are a cinch, you have to remember that those boys were working with analog tapes and simple distortion boxes. Even a simple echo effect was an afternoon's work at the mixing board! They had to do some really innovative stuff to get the sounds they did. They were true musical pioneers. People who say they're overrated don't appreciate them in context.

But enough of that. Let's get back to talking about Petra!

BTTR is the song I like the least on the CD.

I'm still trying to hear where you all are hearing this "rock edge" you all are talking about. It sounds all pop too me.

It's not pure pop, but it's not hard rock either. It's somewhere in the middle.

I don't know if you've heard Greg's solo version, but if you have, I'd think you would definitely notice the difference. The Petra version has more of an edge (tho I agree it's not hard rock) and it's also structured a little better IMO to make it a better song.

I never said it was hard rock because its not even rock, its totally a POP song. I've heard both versions and too be honest there really isn't much difference.

I disagree. There's a lot of difference. I agree that the original is pop, but the Petra version is not. I wasn't saying you said it was hard rock, I was agreeing with SU that it wasn't hard rock.

best bridge on the album, maybe ever...

Post by rexreed » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:06 am

After three months of listening to the new album and the title track I have to say that the bridge on BTTR is probably in my Petra top ten. The rest of the song is OK- I'd like to hear a little more out of Lawry on that one. Especially the Hammond sounding parts that seem to come and go too fast. That song could really jam if they opened it up for more solos. I'm looking forward to more music from the band, and not just remakes of Hartman tunes, thought I'd like a couple more remakes.

Rex, I'd been thinking the same thing about the bridge. It's like a different song altogether and I really like it. The rest just doesn't thrill me, although it has grown on me a little.

All in all, I love this CD and still listen to it over and over. I can't wait for more.

Great CD, IMO would be even better without track 11 on there. It's a filler song in the highest of all forms.
