Oops. Correct, I meant to say it is just unix anyway, as I did say that later in the sentence. The underlying kernel environment for Mac OS X is Darwin. Darwin is a complete operating system without the application layers and graphics interfaces. Darwin is open source technology based on FreeBSD, 4.2BSDLite, and Mach 3.0, all unix systems. Apple has taken that "Aqua" and "chunks of existing open source software from a large number of sources like BSD, GNU, Mach, ... and even Linux" to finish off the OS. It's just missing some of the X Windows subsystem which they allow you to download from their site to convert into a full fledged Unix like machine (X11).

Reaper is one of the few commercial shops that officially support Linux, albeit under WINE and not natively (but they develop for and support the WINE runtime). I haven't looked into it seriously yet but it's getting awesome reviews.
