what about the music? would it be the mellow tones, or would it be a thunderous rocking christmas album?

Re: PetraFan's remarks...

I made mention of this on another Petra website (www.petrarocksmyworld.com). Here is my post, dated 11-21-04.

"'Tis the season to be jolly...fal la la la la, la la la la!

Anyway, just got back from grocery shopping at the local Wal-Mart. In between buying the usual kid stuff (diapers, baby wipes, etc.) and food for the family (including Chewy Chips Ahoy...yum!), I made a quick detour to the CD department. One whole section was set aside for Christmas music...which got me to thinking...

Why has Petra never released a Christmas CD? Should they record one? And would you buy it?

I mean, a Christmas CD is pretty cheap to produce (most artists/bands can record one in less than a week), and they sell very well (despite having a 2-month "sales window"). Many other Christian artists/bands have released Christmas CDs (Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, etc.)...heck, even Stryper released "Reason For the Season"/"Winter Wonderland" as a single!

Petra could record some Christmas hymns like "Away in a Manger"..."Silent Night, Holy Night"..."We Shall Behold the King"...about 7 or 8 of them in Petra's unique hard-rock style (note: use LOTS of keyboards). Plus, have Bob Hartman write 2 or 3 original Christmas songs to add to the album.

To some people, this idea may sound cheesy, hackneyed...maybe even stupid. But IMHO, this would be a great album, and truly a reminder of why Jesus is the "reason for the season". I would definitely buy it in a heartbeat and play it even after the Christmas "season" is over.

And besides...it would be much better than the "barking dogs Christmas CD" (you know the one I'm talking about ). Oh yeah, I also picked up Reba McEntire's 2nd Christmas CD for my wife (she's a huge Reba fan!)."

Some people in their responses said that Petra would never put out a Christmas CD because fans would not accept another special/best of-type CD. And I can kinda see their point. Plus, Josh remarked that although they do not have a full Christmas album, Petra did record a Christmas song..."Mary's Song" from WASHES WHITER THAN.

Oh well...a man can dream, cant he?

Like Petra's very first album, their very first Christmas album should simply be called: "Christmas." :P

sing to beat the system

Caught in the Walmart lines,
Boy I could scream.
Going home to eat
sounds just like a dream.
What will I buy my wife?
She wants a car.
I can't seem to make
paycheck stretch that far.

Wrap u-u-up
Wrap u-u-up
Wrap-u-u-up
Wrap-u-u-up

You try to get done all you like
You can try to have good cheer
But when all of this is over I
just want to have...

my inlaws outta' here
I'll take some heat
and get the in-laws outta' here...

I know that Bob has been asked this questions dozens (probably hundreds) of times and says that Petra will not put out a Christmas album. They would rather do an easter album (and they have written many songs similar to that). He feels that Christmas is overdone. (At least this is what I have read in interviews with him.)

I agree: Easter Album :)

All original songs too (even though I can't think of any they'd cover  )..........and it should be called: PETRA EASTER: THE BUNNY CRIES OUT  j/k

An Easter album would be cool though....I mean, nobody does easter albums

we wish you a merry DA-DA-DA WEEEEE! BANG, CRASH!

Oh man, if Petra ever did a Christmas album, (which they apparently won't) for gosh sakes it better be original songs. I cannot stand most modern remakes of Christmas songs. There are bands that have modernized quaint traditional songs like "Little Drummer Boy" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" to rock or pop music with the exact same lyrics and slightly altered melody, and it just doesn't work.

Mannheim Steamroller is an exception; I really like their Christmas music.

Oh yeah, better mention, I dig johntheumfreak's idea for an Easter album name. "Petra Easter: The Bunny Cries Out." That's more than clever.
