I never understood what's the purpose of the number 666 chosen as the mark of the Beast. Is this just a randomly chosen number, or is there a symbolic significance?

That's all I know. Why the number 6? I don't have the wisdom this verse is asking for, but I've been told that the number 7 is "God's number," a complete number.
6 is CLOSE to 7, but not quite there. Satan TRIED and WANTED to be like God before his fall, which was the reason for the big war in heaven between the good angels and the bad angels (satan and his demons).
So it stand to reason that if God's number is 7 - satan's number is 6... tried to be God, but didn't make it.
why the three 6's? I don't know.... maybe because God is triune (3), so satan also tried to be like God in using three numbers instead of one?

sue, you just answered your own qestions hehehehehehe.
if you check the revelations book youpll see there are "three guys", the antichrist, the beast and a phrophet I think. THREE, like God is three and if you check there`s a part where it say check the number of the beast because is a man number, 666.
man was created on the sixth day, on a course I learned that 6 means "incomplete" and 7 means "complete", the devil is not complete and not matter how much he tries he is never gonna be a 7.
now, we gotta understand that this number is not "evil" I mean, if your card license has a 666 it doesn`t mean the devil is in your car (hahahahaha) that number is a symbol John saw and it means that the Beast of the revelation book is the devil, is a way of showing us that. the number is just a number.

Its so pathetic when metal bands make 666 their symbol...the number of imperfection and "close but no cigar" falls away when they align themselves with Satan.
