Melodies left when the Elefonte's stopped producing, and when the style of music changed, etc. There were more melodies and alternate singers before John. After John came it was wo-oh all over the place, and a few lines here and there. That was the Elefonte effect IMO, not the lack of singers. I have seen Petra in every incarnation just about. The music hasn't done them justice really.
Stryper is Michael Sweet. Period. He writes all of their stuff. The harmonies are his trademark, and have been consistant throughout his records. So, no, I don't think of Stryper as having picked up the harmony torch per se. I know that the new record is nothing more than guys from Stryper playing songs that were in the works for a Michael Sweet solo record.

Yeah Brent that is true about Stryper. It is all M. Sweet. You all should go over to stryperforum.com and click on the link for Tim Gaines and read his interview and I think you will get a different perspective about Stryper. All the songs on Reborn were originally written for Mike's new solo project except Rain and that was written for Mike's previous album called Truth. Oz came in and laid down his guitar licks, but most of it is in the background. Robert also put his drums in there, but the loops are from the original drummer for these songs. BTW in an interview on Sunday Michael said that there is another album in the works for Stryper and they have agreed in principle with Big3 Records to record up to 3 more albums. He said they have not sign the contract yet but it is in the works.

FORGIVE! FORGET! & LET GO!
I, for one, am excited about the possiblity of some Stryper buzz. I am not very interested in the group dynamics of their band though. Not like I am with Petra.
But it could be said that Petra is Bob Hartman. Doesn't matter to me - I still like'em.
I am hopeful mostly that Stryper will create a buzz regarding that style of music. My band is probably best described as classic metal or 80's metal (minus the aquanet). So it could open some doors for us if that sound has a comeback (which there is some evidence of even in the mainstream).
CCM magazine did a pretty big article on the new album so they, it seems, are interested.
