A Concert for Hurricane Relief - More Power To Ya

Believe it or not, I just witnessed Tim McGraw sing "More Power to Ya" on the Concert for Hurricane Relief that is on right now on NBC. Did anyone else see it? He sang okay, but not nearly as good as Greg, and the guitar players were no match at all for how Bob plays that song. I have to admit... just hearing that old song being played, though, tonight on TV, gave me chills. I wish it could have been Petra.

I heard Him (well I guess it was him) play it awhile ago. I did not recognize the song at first, though I knew I should know it. Honestly I thought it was the worst rendition of one of Petra's songs I'd ever heard. And especially with it being one of those songs that not even great singers (who are not Greg) can do right!
Yeah, I've always felt that More Power to Ya, Not of This World and Graverobber should just be left alone. You will NEVER do it better (or even as well) than they did-the originals are so perfectly suited to the themes that covering them will only ruin them.

Oh I couldn't agree with you more, Charl. Those early 80s albums are absolutely remarkable. I also agree that Tim McGraw certainly did not do justice to the song. I was just trying to be nice..., but thank you for being so honest
Actually, I think Tim McGraw did a really lousy job, and the guitarist obviously didn't know how to play the melody. But the message was there, and I know it certainly had to minister to probably millions of people. Even though I didn't like the way they did the song, I was pleasantly surprised to hear it. Bob is far and away my favorite songwriter, and it meant a lot to me to hear one of his songs receive national exposure.

He did that song during the 9/11 relief concerts too.

He's an artist and he did it his way. Though I prefer the Petra version myself, I thought his 9/11 version was pretty good.

I heard this song. I liked to see TimMcGraw singing that even though I prefer petra's version. I think it means that they see petra as an important band. The mp3 file I have is sung live. is that the same version you have?

I'm just glad to hear you mention he play a christian song at a concert for Hurricane Katrina victims. That, and the fact that it was a Petra song, really means a lot.
I remember downloading the clip of Tim McGraw's other performance of Mor Power to Ya - I didn't think it was bad, but I noticed he changed one word:
"the power of His Spirit poured"

"the power of His Spirit
soared" Wonder why he did that?

When i heard mcgraw do that song back in the 9/11 benefit it sounded pretty good considering he tried to give it a country flavor. Not worrying about the sound....we all should be excited that God is using petra music to minister to the world without petra's attempt to "crossover". Maybe ccm should be taking some lessons....its kind of ubelievable that petra is the top selling christian artist in europe, first christian artist to play in india...twice for that matter, inducted to the hard rock cafe, played at farm aids, top selling secular artist singing one of their most heart felt songs..in a completely different genre to boot and petra really hasn't made a strong push to make themselves known. we "petra fans" think petra is hurting themselves by the lack of a website and the manager they choose....but after all we have seen in the faith of bob, John, and the rest of the members of petra....and the results of an incredible ministry....we really need to pray that God continues to use this Farewell tour As a mighty work..... and a message that needs to never die!

Were I going to do a Petra song for something like that, I would've done The Whole World. That one is far more fitting and not as easy to wreck.

I think More power to ya fits pretty well...cause this country and the churches really need massive encouragement to wiat on the loed and stand on God's word!!
