Bands Petra has toured with

Post by js3971 » Fri Nov 04, 2005 5:14 pm

I don't know much abou this topic because I've only seen Petra twice. The first time was on the Beyond Belief tour in El Paso, Texas, and they played alone. The second time was also in El Paso in 98 at the beginning of the God Fixation tour. A girl by the name of Jenny Varnadeux (spelling???) and another band played with them. Jenny was very good, and my wife bought her CD. The other band was fairly good too, but I cannot remember who they were.

From my previous post on the link about around the world radio, I know they toured with Geoff Moore around 88 or so. I also know they toured with White Heart around 95 or so, although I did not see them on that tour.

Those of you out there who know more than I do and have seen Petra more than I have, please lists bands that Petra has toured with that you can remember.

1. I believe they toured with D and K back in the day. What a tour that would have been!

2. When i saw them on the Praise 2 tour in London, Canada, they had John Cox open for them. Apparently one of his new songs is going to be used in conjunction with a Lindsey Lohan movie of all things!

3. On the wakeup call tour in London, Canada i saw Dakoda Motor Co and Lisa bevill open for them.

Here's what I remember.

PP2: 25th Anniversary Tour - Newark, DE 10/30 and Allentown, PA 10/31
Tammy Trent, Shaded Red, John Cox

Saw 'em in Allentown again a year or so later but I don't think it was in support of an album and I can't for the life of me remember the openers (this was Mike Brandenstein's first gig as fill-in bassist when Lonnie left for Tait).

Same thing for when we saw 'em in the rain on the Revival Tour in Central PA (some county fair thing at a muddy racetrack).

I didn't realize how little I actually remembered when I started this post.

Looking forward to New Holland, PA on the 14th!

Openers in Tulsa in the old days:

More Power To Ya' Tour: Noel Paul Stookey
Not of This World Tour:
Beat the System: Leslie (Sam) Phillips
This Means War: Geoff Moore and the Distance

Other tours during that era were:

Servant & DeGarmo & Key. So I never saw these guys on the same stage as Petra, but I know that they all played together at one time or another.

Yea, I remember Servant, I liked them. I should have one of their tapes still around. Several of my Petra tapes had the tour list inside which stated who they were touring with. I'd have to dig them up from somewhere. I've moved, so I'm not sure which box they are in (or other stuff for that matter).

I could be wrong, but didn't Newsboys also tour with Petra at one time? And not to point out the obvious, but currently Black Tolon, Bread of Stone and Farewell June are opening for them. Two out of the three aren't bad.

I found my Beat the System tape. I photo copied it and posted it here...

Looks like the Leslie Phillips Band, the Joe English Band, Steve Taylor and Some Band, and Randy Stonehill toured then. I see to recall Kim Boyce did too.

I am fairly certain DC Talk opened for Petra at Six Flags over St. Louis in 1992.

Looks like we need VH1 to create a show...

"Where are they now?...What happened to the bands that toured with Petra?"

Such is the case with most bands today

Post by js3971 » Sun Nov 06, 2005 8:57 am

They come and go so quickly. I do remember Johnny Q. Public. I didn't have his tapes or CDs or anything, but seems like I remember a video of his. Anyone remember Grover Levy. He didn't tour with Petra, but I did see him once with Margaret Becker and Dana Key. Dana sang a lot of the old D & K songs which was cool. Grover seemed pretty talented, but he only put out one or two albums and disappeared from Christian Music.
