Very interesting interview at Christianity Today

Post by Kirkman » Tue Nov 22, 2005 1:44 pm

Check it out here:

http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/ ... -1105.html

Definitely a good interview with real insights and reflections from John and Bob, rather than the standard stuff.

And they also have an album review here:

Kudos to them for their great coverage of Petra's last year.

Good interview....I'm glad they said some of the things they said. Today's "christian" music just isn't what it is all cracked up to be....Bob said it's like they throw a dart and see who sticks...that's about right.

It's not about the music...it's about God....PERIOD.

It is a good article, there are some good insights into CCM. They really sound like they do feel it's time to retire and they're comfortable with the decision.

Looks like a good interview. This quote by Bob Hartman reminded me of a story:

"For the longest time, we felt like outsiders. When we first started going to GMAs, it was really dominated by Southern gospel. Contemporary Christian music was coming in with Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris and Evie. Our style was looked at as being a real offshoot that they didn't want to spend too much time with. We felt sort of on the outside until later on when things began to change."

I have a friend who has attended GMA every year for years. He was at one of the first appearances of Petra at GMA, and Greg Volz walked out on stage and started to say some words about who Petra was and why they played the kind of music they did. Suddenly, a humorless voice from the back of the room boomed out, "Shut up and sing, boy!" They got no love from the GMA in those early years.

Last Concert?

Post by BForm » Tue Nov 22, 2005 3:30 pm

Did anyone else say "hmmmmmm" when they saw the question about one final concert to say farewell? From John's answer it looks like they are still cooking up something.

My church 3,500 strong is still looking into bringing in Petra in the Spring. The last thing they were told was at the first of November was to call back in mid Janurary to see about Petra's availability. The new CD also has the booking agents/managements info for concert dates. Does this sound like an artist that is calling it quits in 6 weeks? I will bet some money that Inpop will want them to tour to promote the CD/DVD in the spring if the demand is there.

Cottonwood Creek Baptist in Allen, Tx. Its just 20 minutes north of Dallas. They bring in CCM artists about every quarter in a year, but most of the time its unknowns. Cindy Morgan and Aaron Jeffrey have been brought in in the past.

I have some relatives that just moved there

Post by js3971 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:14 pm

My cousin had been living there for a while, but I just found out about a month ago. I had known he was somewhere in the DFW area. His mom and dad, just moved out there too. They aren't Christians so they don't go to church anywhere.

the end

John told us in Enid that if this album took off like a rocket and there was some SERIOUS demand, they might bow to the pressure and do some more shows, but honestly, guys... don't hold your breath. Plan for this to be the last batch of Petra's shows and you won't be disappointed if it really is the last batch of Petra shows.

In regards to more shows after Jan. 1st: Of course I would love it! However my concern is for Greg and Paul. I wonder if they would be kept on or if they need to make commitments to other gigs. They have to put food on the table. I woul dstill love Bob and John to tour with whomever, but it is a little sweeter for me when it's PETRA rather than Bob, John and band.

In regards to the interview: Very telling. I nearly began to weep as I listened to the Farewell cd - to those songs with such powerful messages, and then I thought about what Bob and John said about the state of CCM. THEN I shuttered to think about the young people who are just like me. I NEEDED a Petra so badly. Not some band who is straddling the fence, but men who are BOLD!

So I make this suggestion. Petra may go on a bit after this year, maybe not, but they will retire SOMEday. As Petheads - who know GOOD music and more importantly GODly music, we need to seek it out; spread the word about it; and SUPPORT IT!

There is a "Jason" out there who needs a new "Petra" in his life!

I assume it means he has a rough mix of the album. In other words, InPop sent him an early production copy for review purposes, or something like that.

Yeah, I got an early version of the album that was a lot more rough than the final one. It included a lot more talking from the band members than what was in the final version. Presumably a lot of this stuff will be restored in the DVD.
