GOD FIXATION...forgotten album?

Post by St_Augustines_Pears » Mon Jan 09, 2006 2:14 pm

I was listening to the live FAREWELL album, and I realized that (except for the PETRA PRAISE albums), nearly every album with Schlitt as vocalist is represented (barring his 1st with the band, BACK TO THE STREET)...except for GOD FIXATION.

I mean, not one song from the album is played, even in the rock and mellow medleys. Now, granted, the album is not very "hard rock" (I think they were trying for a more alternative sound, ala Matchbox 20, etc.). There are really only 3 songs that would be considered "heavy", those being "A Matter of Time", "St. Augustine's Pears", and the title track.

That does NOT mean the album is crap, however...far from it! On the contrary, GOD FIXATION has some of the best lyrics ever penned by Hartman and his co-writers. I made a comment over a year ago on the Zone (or maybe it was another Petra site  ) that I didn't like the album, except for my all-time favorite song, "St. Augustine's Pears". I have definitely changed my mind with repeated listening. It is now tied with ON FIRE! as my favorite Petra album.

GOD FIXATION has helped me tremendously over this past troubled year, with my divorce being finalized and my Dad's death, among other things. Songs like "Over the Horizon", "Shadow of a Doubt", "Magnet of the World", and "If I Had To Die For Someone" have given me strength through some very horrid times. The song "Hello Again" (and reading God's word on the subject) gives me great peace knowing that I will see my Dad again someday.

Just wanted to talk about the most underrated Petra album, and wonder why it is not represented on FAREWELL. Your thoughts and opinions?

P.S. When I saw Petra in Waterloo, IA on 11-10-05, Schlitt and Hartman both signed my GOD FIXATION sleeve. I said to Bob, "I know you didn't play much on it, but you did write it!". He laughed and said, "Yes, I did!". I told him how much I appreciated the song "Hello Again" and told him how it reminded me of my Dad. Bob asked if my Dad was a believer, and I said "Yes, my Dad accepted Christ as his Saviour just four days before he died.". Bob's response? "That's great! That has to make you feel much better!".

Yes, it does...Revelation 21:4 and Luke 15:1-7...yes, it does!

God Fixation is a very underrated CD; it has some beautiful stuff on it. Sometimes people just don't know a good thing. With limited space, though, stuff has to be cut when you're putting together a live CD.

It's nice to see you posting again; I hope things are going a little better for you.

I noticed that too, and I just figured it was mostly because Bob didn't really play much on that album.

I like most of GF, but it is on my list of not listened to very often.

At times, some of the songs have hit me and I will play it over and over.

I love St Augustine's Pear's, just for the sound of it. Its a catchy tune.

Falling Up is my favorite song, a very timely message atr a popint in my Life.

If I had to Die for Someone is another catchy tune, with a more modern sound.

Ther are 2-3 songs that I skip; The invitation, Shadow of a doubt and Magnet of the World. The songs have a good message, but for listening enjoyment, nah!

BTTS is so keyboard heavy, I'm sure it was near impossible to improvise without them.

God fixation is not too bad of an album. It just came out at a time where Petra seemed to be having trouble finding themselves. As for it not being on the farewell. My guess would be cause Hartman didn't really play much on that one.

That's Sue D.'s favorite album. It's been my least favorite, but I do have to say that there are songs on there that I absolutely love, just because of the message in them. Maybe I should just get that one out again and listen to it....I might change my mind.

Well, not my TOP favorite, but definitely up there near the top.

Beautiful lyrics is what stands out in my mind about this album... if you're ever feeling down and out, take a listen to OVER THE HORIZON (penned by Kevin's wife, Chelsea). It has picked me up many a time:

Traveling far from home
Out into the unknown
Nothing familiar around me
This journey seems so long
As I await the dawn
All alone and so weary

There's a Light over the horizon
I'll keep walking down this road of hope
Faithful in my prayer
There's a Light over the horizon
Though I may not know what lies ahead
I trust that You'll be there

I spend too many days
Lost in a mindless haze
Not really sure of my purpose
And I may question You
And what I'm going through
When life seems so uncertain

Chorus

Some days are a mystery to me
But I believe that answers are revealed in time
Even when the path is just not clear
I'm anticipating what I'll find
Oh...

There's a Light over the horizon
I'll keep walking down this road of hope
Faithful in my prayer
There's a Light over the horizon
Though I may not know what lies ahead
I know that you'll be there
You'll be there

And for a fantastic song about our calling to heaven, listen to The Invitation. It's just a gorgeous picture of how God calls out to us to come to Him and enjoy Him for eternity. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

I totally agree about God Fixation being underated. I would definatley put it in my top 5 (in no particular order: This Means War, Beyond Belief, God Fixation, Jeckle&Hyde, Unseen Power)

It was also an album that really showcased one of my favorite Petra "casts". Those guys even got sevral song credits, a rare thing with Bob. I think it is not only a great cd, but an historically important one for Petra.

Yea, "If I Had To Die For Someone" is a classic Petra song! It's uniquely personal for the band and thought-provoking and, yea, it has that Matchbox 20 "Push" rhythm! :)

I feel the same way about the album No Doubt that y'all feel about God Fixation...

Those two albums were incredibly popular both in my youth group and at my (public) high school...and both rank in my top five in terms of favorite Petra albums. I think that if Petra had released a couple more albums in the same vein as God Fixation they may have been able to revive their popularity with those of us who were just coming of age in the late '90's - most of my friends were into the softer rock genres...and only a few of us were into the harder stuff like what Petra played in the early '90s (I graduated HS in 1999).

By the way, Beyond Belief, Unseen Power, and a tie between Jekyll and Hyde and Wake-Up Call would round out my top five.

Someone asked John at the Murphy concert why Petra didn't play anything from "Back To The Street". He just said the music was "too old".

I always thought "Matter of Time" would have been a good song to add to the live set, expecially when they started touring with the Jekyl and Hyde material. It rocks, therefore, it was my favorite song on the CD. "St Augustine's Pears" was also a favorite.
I did hear them play "If I Had to Die For Someone" in concert shortly before the CD came out. I seem to recall hearing them play "Hello Again" live too, but can't trust my memory on that one.

I dunno.. Bob kinda got away from being the primary song writer starting with "Wake Up Call". But God Fixation does mark the first album that was primarily written by other members.

Two of my all time favorite Petra songs are off that album. "Whole World", and "Thankful Heart". And there are two other that I highly like.

All this talk about God Fixation got me to put it in and listen to it.
I've always liked it and agree it's been under appreciated.
