I think you should have put the years 1988-1993 all in one catagory because through those years all the members were the same in the group. I think those are the best years or in some peoples words the "Dream Team"

I will always love the dream team, and there are things about each line up in Petra's history I like, but the most recent line up of John, Bob, Greg and Paul rocked. Greg and Paul sure brought a lot to Petra.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with executioner on that one. Then I'd put the era of 81-85 as a very close second.

Funny you post this question because this week I was actually thinking about running a poll abut who people think was the best Petra lineup. Best era definately was 1990-94. Petra Praise 1 to Wakeup Call was the pinnacle of their career. They had awesome band personalle, had best selling records, and were the hottest Christian live act out there. Petra I think will always be fondly remembered for this time.

I chose all, can't really pick one over the others. Maybe the early 80's (the Volz era that is), since it was probably the period with the most artistic and imaginative work. I've always been a huge fan of the first two albums though. They have a special place in my heart-and are the only Petra albums my brothers didn't hate-that of course was because they didn't realize it was Petra.
I have to admit I would have split them quite differently, though I think we all would.

I vote as the others above did, that 1988-93 was the best time... Although I am obliged to say the original lineup would come second for me with quite a bit of personal bias

THE JOHN SCHLITT ERA!
I don't care what year it was, or what album...as long as John was singing on it.
John, if you're reading this...
Whenever you put out your new solo album...I'll buy it.
If you hit anywhere in Iowa on tour...I'm there!
A motion to adjourn this meeting of the JSBU (John Schlitt Brownnose Union) has been presented...
Second that? Aye. Meeting adjourned.
I'm voting for 1872 - 1905 (no, just kidding)

I voted for 1990-1994; I think Petra's musicianship was strongest and most mature at that time.
If 1988-1993 were one of the choices, I would have picked that one because I see that time period as the "pinnacle" years - Petra's first climax. Then 2003-2005 was their second climax with J&H and Farewell.
1995-2002 was not strong at all. To my opinion, Petra was not really Petra anymore because of the annual lineup changes and less intense albums. To me, it's almost as if Petra disbanded in 1995 and then re-banded in 2003. At least the positive thing about that time period is that it proves to us how well Petra was able to endure such a mountain of tribulation - and their faith in Christ remained as strong as ever.
Why is 1984-1985 one of the choices? That's only a two-year period.

Huh? Whether you like it or not, Beat the System is still considered Petra's most popular album by many non-fan discographers. 82-85 was the first highpoint in Petra's career. Many people having only casually heard of the band, know songs from this era.

I think Beyond Belief is their most popular album myself. I think Beat the System would be a close second.

But yeah, they hit a peak when Greg was with them, and then another when John joined the group.

For the poll I voted "all the above." For me, there's something to like, and that has touched me on every album. I couldn't choose just one anyway.

Does ANYONE think that Beat the System is ANYTHING like ANY other Petra stuff, relative to Petra? As far as grouping 86-89, I knew I would get some flack, but I like the late 80's a whole lot more than the 90's for Petra; so I grouped them with the mid 80's, which I also love. Just a little prejudice there.
