Favorite Album Cover Artwork

Post by MineField » Sun Oct 08, 2006 6:27 am

What would be your pick for "Favorite Petra Album Cover"? My pick would be the cover for "On Fire!" :D I thought it was the coolest artwork for an album cover I had ever seen in the christian hard rock/metal market...and still do! 8)

ROCK ON!!

It's hard to pick the best one (maybe More Power To Ya) but the worst coverart is on Jekyl & Hyde (even though it's their best record for ages...)

I'm into photography more than artwork, so I vote for Unseen Power.

It's a really eye-catching shot.

My favorite album cover is from ON FIRE! "The sword of the Lord", if you will.

As for worst album cover...sorry, trodLAN, it's not JEKYLL & HYDE. That dubious distinction goes to DOUBLE TAKE.

I actually like the JEKYLL & HYDE cover. Stark, menacing, and dark...just like the music within the album.

The best album cover is by far More Power to Ya, and yes, Pears, Double Take is probably the worst.

ps J&H is awsome!

I think the best one is "PETRA PRAISE 2 - WE NEED JESUS" the WHOLE art-work is awesome...

Also, I've to say that I like the background pic of PETRA on NO DOUBT... I mean, while u'r reading the lyrics, they're looking at you... jajajaja...

As far as the best looking artwork for the entire album, to me its a toss up between Petra Praise and Unseen Power. As for just the front cover itself, to me it would be Beyond Belief because the band is on it.

As far as the worst, to me it would have to be God Fixation as it portays the band to be something other than a rock band ...

A lot of interesting picks here! I, myself, do tend to lean more towards the earlier Petra albums, for their best album covers! They have more of a retro/old-school "Classic" Rock vibe to them...if that makes any sense! :P

I'll second whoever said "Double Take." The reason? It is just a stock image from a stock art service, and it has NO relevance at all to the band or the music. I think this is the only Petra cover where they didn't at least commission some kind of custom artwork (whether an illustration or a photo or a combo).

At least God Fixation had a concept and featured original photography of the band.

Another curiosity with God Fixation...

the photo for the back cover of this was taken in a diner as was the back cover photo of the A&M release of Flat as a Pancake (the first album from John's secular group, Head East).

Coincidence?

Who knows?

Check it out!

One-two-Washes Whiter Than-Come and Join Us.
Not only the two most pleasing to me visually, but two of the most fitting for the sound of their respective albums. One could tell Washes was heading in a completely different direction (like it or not) without ever having to hear it. CAJU was obviously a classic rock album, with the cover even capturing the faint touch of antiquity in the title song. And the Crusader-ish cross was the coolest Petra logo ever.

I am the kind of person who will listen to albums based on the covers alone-if it is done correctly, it will tell you much about the music inside. So my faves are often ones that tell you what they are advertising most clearly.
Take God Fixation-it suited the style which that album tended to quite nicely. Not a bad album cover. On the other hand, Double Take read as blank as the stock photos used for it. Not a good album cover.

Charl, I completely agree with you! I, too, am drawn to an album by the artwork it submits! When I first heard "This Means War!" and "On Fire!" that is what sparked my interest in wanting to hear their music, was the appealing artwork! I like the idea of Petra's earlier albums that featured the spaceship/flying guitar illustrations as well as the cover to "Come And Join Us" It reminds me of a scene taken right out of a medievel play! :P

I actually think it WAS a coincidence. There is a theme on that album cover work of a bus ride to Heaven, and I think the diner is supposed to have something to do with that theme. Notice that the "angel Gabriel" appears (unawares) in the artwork (look real close at the people).
