My thoughts on the Classic Petra CD

Post by wiley16350 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 1:20 pm

When I heard that Petra was doing a new cd of remakes, I was excited. I had been thinking about that very thing recently. I thought how awesome would it be if they would redo some of the harder songs from the first 2 albums like Wake Up, Storm Comin, Gonna Fly Away, Walkin' In The Light, Come and Join Us, Without you I Would Surely Die, Where Can I Go because these songs rocked musically but aren't so great vocally in terms of toughness (or grit). I also thought about how they could update some of the 80's harder songs by dialing down the keyboards and giving them a grittier and tougher sound. Now of course I was hoping all this would be with John Schlitt as the vocalist because he has the tougher, grittier voice. Now don't get me wrong, i like all these songs the way they are and Greg Volz is an excellent singer, but a part of me wishes they were grittier and tougher and not as much pop. I will say that I am still excited for this project even though Greg Volz is the singer and from what I have heard of the samples I have reason to be. And I would love the next Classic Petra project to be a redo of the first 2 albums because the only reason those 2 albums don't rank higher on the Petra list is because of the weak vocals. So that is how I feel about the new Classic Petra lineup. A little disappointed because Schlitt isn't the singer but very excited about the potential there is to improve old Petra songs and even give us some new material to enjoy.

Welcome to the Zone!!!

To be honest, although I’m excited about this album, my preference is never for a Band to re-record what they built their legacy on. The originals are what they are for a reason. I know in some cases with some bands production was limited and money didn’t allow for a bigger budget album; however they did with what they had and it worked during those years.

I love music that is constantly progressing in style; God is a creator and give us the opportunity to create musically. I think this should have been all new material, I hope eventually that they end up doing a brand new album of all new material.

The old CDs have been out for years and from looking at the Petra Merchandise site, it seems as if there is still plenty of stock. Plus Word and EMI have everything on itunes including the first two albums.

But again, with all that said, I think if the first two albums ever does get re-recorded, then it should be the original 1972 band plus Greg X singing everything.

Agreed. Greg Volz was the singer they wanted from the beginning but it just didn't pan out until the second album. From what I understand, If they could have had him, he would have been the singer on those first two albums and was on part of the second, so he's the man to do it if it ever were to be done.

My preference would be: The classic Petra setup, just as it is with Greg X Volz. Just two or three re-makes, for example Second Wind and Angel of Light plus 10 completely new songs. No vocal-auto-tune, heavier/more dynamic drums and louder/more guitars.

I suspect that the idea is to get the bulk of the classic line up's catalog reworked and doing just a couple songs per album, well, they probably wouldn't live long enough to see it completed. I do wish that they would at least include the songs from WWT though. There are some good songs on that album, they just need to be heavier.

I agree on WWT, those songs are awesome. It would be cool to hear Morning Star with a more heavier feel to it.
