Classic Petra - Sweden July 8th

Hi
I went to the concert at Gullbrannafistivalen in Sweden on Friday.
Few years ago I did not expect to go to another Petra concert, so this was really great.
This was my first time with Greg and Mark as I did not know Petra until the time of TMW.
I almost did not go to this concert as it was a long drive all be myself, but I am so happy I decided to go!
I'm a sound engineer so the first thing I’ll point out it that the sound was just on spot. It sounded fantastic.
(L'Acoustics array's with L'Acoustic subs all the way across under the stage. It IS a good help, but still needs a good person at the PM5D).
Often it's a pain for my, going to concerts as I hear all the things that are not right. Not this time. I loved how they sounded! I don't like it when effects (especially delay) is not muted while someone (Greg) is talking, but that's a matter of opinion and it certainly did not ruin anything for me. Otherwise I liked the effects used.
All instruments sound naturally and clean and it was possible to separate them in the mix. Bass was firm and even and i did not have the feeling of being temporarily deaf after the concert (meaning it was not too loud in any way). As a comparison Leeland play a concert on the same stage an hour earlier. They play nice and have a good message and I'm sure they connect to the crowd. But it was LOUD. I did not measure it (My HTC desire is not reliable above 92dB), but I stood just behind the mix position and I do like to be able to feel the bass/bd, but not that much. Keyboards were only audible during parts without guitar
. I listened to some of it, and then I went outside and found Bob and Mark
Now we're at it, lighting was not my cup of tea. Maybe its 80's'ish but most of the time is was all blue, all red or all green. This made it really hard to take good pictures
As far as I could tell Mark, Bob and John brought their own instruments but played on rented backline. I saw at least two keyboard-cases with John's name on it and I think I saw 3-4 guitar bags and a hardcase with Mark's Peavey backup-bass.
The setlist was the same as in Norway on Saturday. As you can hear on the video from Norway Greg has some problems with an infection that influenced his voice. Hence there was a range in the middle that he could not hit. It did not stop him at all. He gave all he could and it was great to experience him passion.
Luckily he had no problems with the high notes
Bob apologized in the end of the set and wanted to let us know that it bothered Greg most of all and told us that if they were invited back we would get the whole Petra-experience next time.... sounded like a promise of a BTTR2-tour
As always Bob looked like he really enjoyed playing on stage. He had this subtle smile on his face and as always you can't put a finger on his work. He played a Gibson LesPaul Studio about half the set and one of his BGH Baritone T-style guitars most of the rest except the few songs where he played an acoustic Guild.
Mark plays his (new, I guess) Fender Jazz Bass 5. I'm not a Jazz bass fan (I play a Music Man Stingray 5 myself) but I loved what he did with it! He used a rented Ampeg SVT cab, but I could not tell what head he used. I did not think of taking a picture focused on it
It might be a SVT7/8 Pro.
I have mentioned before that I am a Ronny-fan... big time. But I must say that Mark is in my heart not too. He told me that he had not played much in the years since he left Petra and I can imagine what a work it must have been to get back on the beat. I missed a few notes and I could see that he noticed too
But his does some nice stuff and he's still standing tall and slim in the left side on the stage. He still had some nice moves but I like the new ones better that what he did (and weared) on CITAS....
Louie looks like he always did, when sitting behind the drums (DW) with his Mickey Mouse t-shirts. But I almost did not recognize him when I first saw him before the concert. The last years since I think last saw him in Norway in 1999 has not made him look younger, but I guess that goes for me as well
John spend most of the time behind both his hair and his keyboard in a dark corner of the stage. On two songs he came out with his Mobile controller and played solos. .. nice. I really enjoyed having John back in Petra. I really think he's an important part of the "right" Petra sound
It was not as sample filled and with extravagant arpeggios as in the old days and he no longer need a keyboard tech just to load the samples for the next song in time (ref early 90's), but he just does what he does best
I did miss him on the intro to It is Finished, but I guess it can't all be as is used to be
He played a VR760 (with all sign covered by gaffa) and I guess the other keyboard was a S90, but I could not see that. I have no idea what the rackmount unit mentioned in the riders was.
Of course he play the mother of all keytars.. the Lynx LN4. As it's his favorite keyboard I guess he has had a number of them, and this in particular I do not remember seeing before.
All together they did a fantastic job! And it was really nice to hear two of my all-time favorite Petra songs live in the original setting (Clean and It is Finished)!
To me this concert proved that Petra is timeless. But it was funny to see the difference in audience for Leeland an Petra. I guess the average age was the same, but the amount of person above 35 years of age was way higher at the Petra concert, but many of those brought their kids to teach them some "real culture"
God bless.
