Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
Did anyone really take a look at the Tale of the Tape?
Let's be real. Greg. Size, youth, reach advantage, can punch through a stone wall...
Greg in 4 rounds.
Unless Perry is shrieking...then Greg in 6.

Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
Yeesh- THis is silly to compare but as a singer, frontman and songwriter then Steve Perry runs cirlces around Greg. John Schlitt too, but why compare ? Greg is still a fine musician doing his thing. Steve is sitting at home collecting royalties.

Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
The way I compare musicians is to look at their lifestyles... Greg wins (He's CLEAN!)

Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
You cannot compare those guys. There is a huge difference in range, texture, vulnerability, soul, etc. Perry wins communicating the emotion in multiple genres. Greg is unique. Greg was cutting edge in Petra's beginning. Greg is irreplaceable in his role, as Perry was in his. Where Greg would win is in the message.

Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
Sorry there is no comparing these 2, they are nothing alike. Perry has so much soul and emotion with his vocals; I urge anyone to go and listen to Journey's Trial By Fire album and listen to the soul and smoothness of that voice. Greg could never do that.

Re: Greg Volz vs Steve Perry
Volz is a great singer with an excellent range, but Perry, I think, is (was?) more versatile. His live performances were also very spontaneous, and he wasn't afraid of improvisation, in some cases even making up a new melody in the middle of a song.
That said, Volz has been able to hang onto his singing skills, perhaps as a result of a cleaner lifestyle and more respect for his body (not wearing himself out with an insane tour schedule, for instance). I think Perry lived a very hard life and it affected his voice.
