Speaking as a marketing and graphic designer, I don't think much needs to change, unless we're overhauling the look of the whole site.

My suggestions:
1. Lose the reaching warrior man. It's awkward how it cuts off on the bottom.
2. The sword logo can stay (as the Pethead masses appear to be fiercely loyal to it), but the overlay looks like a stack of books. Perhaps something more metallic/chrome with a bevel and a glow and simplify (IE, what Stephen did). Then see what your gradient overlay looks like. If it's a sword, let's make it look like an flippin' sword.
3. Change the typeface away from Papyrus in "the" and "zone." We're not a massage parlor/garden supplier. Petra means ROCK. R-O-K ROCK. Besides, Papyrus sucks to the uttermost. Fonts communicate a lot before the text they spell out is even read.
4. Create the file in PS, and save it as a transparent .png, and you won't have that white artifacting around the letters.

Then you have yourself a simple and memorable logo.

The collages previously suggested are probably fine for what we're trying to accomplish at the Petra Zone, which is just be a place to talk about Petra, if you're ok with a 400 pixel tall header (Though I wouldn't want to scroll through half the page just to get to content below). The content of the collages won't look like anything but pile of tiny blobs if you drop down to a 100 pixel header. I know we're not selling or branding anything collectively, but an effective logo is reducible in size and will still retain it's impact.

Funny, I attended a Baptist church in 80's that had gold cushions for the pews and dark red carpet throughout. They commented several times the gold represented Jesus' birth and red represented His Blood.
