Dream team live concert video album

Post by andreasbjerre » Wed May 30, 2012 2:09 am

I am probably not the first one wondering: Why never a live concert video album from the so called "dream team" period? It would have been open and shut to make a live video album from this succesfull period, but does anyone know why it didn't happen? For example there are great live footage on the dance/in need to hear/in the likeness music videos so they must have had quite professionel shut concerts in their hands from 1987-1994...

So true; I know there is alot of solid professional footage out there, but who knows who owns it. On the Why Wait Tour with Josh McDowell when they came to Houston that show was completely filmed(according to the promoter) to be some type of live concert experience. He said their intent was for it to be released as a long form concert video with actually Josh McDowell being the focus of the video and it was planned to have some type of showcase on Petra, but for some reason it never made it to press. He believes that Josh McDowell owned the rights to the whole thing and it wasn't too much longer after that McDowell Ministries filed chapter 11, so its probably lost forever.
It's a shame because this is not only Petra's most popular era, but also this was MTV's heyday and all of the top artists out there had marketed something to the consumer. I do think at some time Bob needs to rerelease all the videos in DVD form all in one package, plus you know there is alot of footage that they have that we have never seen.

We all have to also wonder how many songs that over the years never made it on any of the albums. I know of at least 2, one from On Fire! called "Trial of the Sword" which was on the original track listing of the prerelease we saw at the Christian music store and also a song from JAH which I do not remember the name. It is industry norm to have anywhere from 12-15 songs completed and most recorded for an album with usually only 10-12 making the cut. I saw a U2 video where The Edge was saying for their latest release they actually had enough songs for 3 full length albums at one time and was really seriously considering releasing 2 full length albums at once, he was also saying they have enough songs near completion that will last them another 25 years if they wanted to use them. One song on their latest was actually recorded for The Joshua Tree but at the last minute was replaced with "With or Without You".

I wonder how many more versions of "God gave rock and roll to you" are out there, unreleased?

I actually don't care; I've never liked any version Petra has ever done and IMO has always been wasted space on their albums. There had to be something better that they could have put in its place; something original at the very least.

I've got a theory on this.

The so called Dream Team was hugely successful so there's no doubt there would have been an interest for a live concert with those guys. However one of the reasons for their success was that the sound was very “in” at that time (now it sounds almost hopelessly dated in my opinion). I play an instrument myself and back then I always wondered what exactly Petra did to get that certain sound. It sounded almost unnatural. Too clean and plastic like. No harsh or dirty sound at all. Nothing dangerous about it, all just very homogeneous, very planned, not very much live-feel to it.

Like Brent has told us Louie hardly played drums on the albums with the dream team. I could go on mentioning stuff like that.

My point is that I guess it would be rather difficult to make a live album that would satisfy the fans given that the overproduction, electric drums and some of the other effects would not work in a live situation. Dream team stuff would be hard to do as good live as on record. The same goes for many other rock bands who were in their prime during the 80s and 90s. Just my guess...

In this interview Bob states that the CAJU version of Killing My Old Man was actually the only fully completed unreleased song. He also mentioned some unfinished music for the Beat The System album. And that's it.

I guess the song you mention and the song for JAH (It's A New Day) were never more than demo's. I wouldn't be surprised if Bob still has a bunch of demo's. Some of the songs for JAH had been written years before they actually decided to make another rock record.

I always assumed that all these were in the "demo catagory" I could be wrong but isn't any song that is not actually copyrighted but recorded just considered a demo? When copyrighted they would have that year stamp on them, not the year of actual production. They could have been written and even produced like in 1997, but until they are copyrighted they officially are considered just demos and do not have any date posted with them. All of Van Halen's new album were just demos and in some cases written and even recorded 30 some years ago, and all the songs were recorded or rerecorded 2011-2012 so are copyrighted as such. That is why an artist won't copyright anything until it officially makes it on an album and in some cases it is one of the last things that gets done before the actual release date. In otherwords I and I know many others would love to hear these demos.

Matthew RJ wrote:Canadian Band Hokus Pick (anyone remember these guys) released an album called "The B-sides" which I believe were their cut tracks. Of note on the B-Sides was a cover of Adonai intended for Never Say Dinosaur but never made the cut on that album.

Even if it's demos, I'm sure Petra fans would pay ...and in this digital age, you don't even need a whole album to sell something.
I would, and would also like to see how Bob writes all these songs.

Hah, I was listening to their album "Snappy" just yesterday! Only album I ever had from these guys, I always sort of enjoyed it, but I have the feeling that any other album from them wouldn't be the same. 8)

Snappy was a fun album. I love the radio theater bonus track they snuck in.

And that one was the only track I didn't like... although, I need to listen to it again, it may grow on me. It certainly was creative though, not your usual hidden track material!

Stephen Yake is the guy that if there was any archive might have some live video from the Dream team, I would love to see it released.

I don't think that theory holds up. I saw Petra live during that time period and they put on an excellent show that sounded great. There's no reason in the world it couldn't have been recorded for a live video.

AGREED!!! I saw them about 9 times during the Dream Team years and they were always spot on and put on a great show.
