Beat the System- The album

Post by cvs2kids » Sat Apr 13, 2019 12:23 pm

Listened to it all the way through after many years.

Although it definitely has a "techno-pop" 1980's vibe, I find the sings are strong musically and lyrically.

BTS & CB are lyrically as meaningful today as 1984. Even Witch hunt, the most "unique song", has a great hook. With not a lot of re-work, that could have been played as a rock song.

Funny thing is, in today's hip-hop, computer mastered songs, BTS is almost current.

Who would've thunk!

I like it.
True, I don't like the electronic/techno/pop influence, but the songs are still good. Witch Hunt is a fun song, and Adonai and It Is Finished are very good songs. It Is Finished is perhaps the song that got me into Petra (though I had also heard The Colouring Song)

It would have been better without the techno, but I guess that was a trend back then. Rez Band had released some electronic rock at the same. But a good song is a good song. Great album

Beat the System is, I believe, the only Petra album on which every song was written by Bob Hartman exclusively (correction: "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" was written by Russ Ballard).

I've always liked this album. It's a quintessential 80s album, but it's one of the best from the era in my opinion.

My only criticism is that it's basically a Bob Hartman and Greg Volz album. Mark Kelly and Louie Weaver didn't have one second of studio time, and John Lawry didn't join the band as a full time member until recording was all but finished. At least we get to hear the whole band playing songs from the album on Captured in Time and Space.

I like Beat the System more as time goes by. Yesterday I put on "It is Finished" for our family to listen to the car on our way to our Easter Sunday service. It's my official Easter soundtrack.

It Is Finished is the perfect easter song. It's more dramatic than most Petra songs, has a cool vibe
