PETRA Beyond Belief 30th Anniversary Reunion Interview with Ron Roxtar June 25th 2020

Post by zman7720000 » Thu Jul 02, 2020 2:16 pm

All five members of the Beyond Belief Petra line-up, Bob Hartman, Ronny Cates, John Lawry, John Schlitt and Louie Weaver talk with Ron RoXtar about the album, tour, videos, songs, movie and the... future? This is the first time in five years they've been together. It's a hilarious discussion that is to be shared with those who love Petra's music and more importantly ministry. Wait for he end credit scene!!!

I do NOT own or share any royalties of songs, images, videos in this interview. I do NOT currently or plan in the future to gain any monetary profits from this interview video. It is strictly for entertainment purposes.

Wow, has it really been 30-years? I remember going to the mall with my friend to buy this album on cassette. This was Petra at their absolute peak, at least in terms of popularity and albums sales. Some might argue musically, too, but I think that came a few years later with Wake Up Call. It greatly annoys me that they didn't produce a live album during the Beyond Belief tour since, in hindsight, it would have been the perfect time to do it. They were never bigger before or after.

Too bad we couldn't have at least gotten a 30th Anniversary deluxe "remix/remaster" with whatever extras they could dig up (surely there have to be some good quality live recordings from the period even if it's not a full concert). Did the Elefante Bros. and Word take better care of the studio masters than StarSong?

Bob and Johnny L. Have said that the label's budge t never allowed for recording anything but the album tracks...ever. No un-released cuts, no alternate takes.

Yes, I've heard that as well, but surely there has to be something that could have been included with a deluxe anniversary release. Or, heck, as long as we're dreaming, get the guys back in the studio to record a couple of new songs.

Of course it's all a moot point since Christian bands rarely get that kind of treatment.

I didn't care for the sound of this record. I true remix would have been great.

How about something like David Gilmore recently did for Pink Floyd's "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" where he recorded new instruments to replace some of the original recording? Primarily Nick Mason recorded a new all acoustic drum track to replace the original electronic drums, and concert recordings of the late Rick Wright's keyboards were added to the mix in order to give the record more of an ensemble sound (the original album used almost all session musicians with Mason and Wright acting primarily as consultants). There is a lot of debate among Floyd fans as to whether or not the new mix is actually an improvement. I happen to be one of those who really likes the sound of the original album.

Yeah, the Beatles stereo mixes caused a big stink. You like what you know. But, sometimes things get in the way, like tone.

Purists don't like what Giles Martin has been up to, that's for sure, but then, purists never like anything but the "untainted" originals. Fortunately, they are such a tiny segment of the market that they can be safely ignored. Everybody else seems to love the recent Beatles remixes with their unprecedented clarity and punch (and I'm not talking that nasty compression and "smiley face EQ" nonsense but genuine dynamic range).

Just finished watching, after having bookmarked it some time ago. Nice to see the guys together again. On Fire, Beyond Belief, and Unseen Power. That's my Petra.
