Newsboys Covering Petra Songs?
Upon recently downloading the new Newsboys album STAND, I couldn't help but wonder with anticipation & excitement if certain songs on their track listing like, "Stand," "Clean, and "No Doubt" were possibly Petra covers. However, I quickly realized that while common Christian subject matter may be repetitive in nature, CCM artists seldomly cover each other's work. Why is that? Is it a financial issue? I welcome this group's thoughts on this topic. We may never know. Until then, if I need to hear 1/3 of dc Talk covering a Petra song, I am left with listening to Kevin Max's "interpretation" of "Louie's Solo" from Never Say Dinosaur.

Well, One Bad Pig did a cover of “Judas’ Kiss.” Both Russ Taff and Chris Eaton recorded the song “Vision” by Eaton. Sheila Walsh did “Don’t Turn Your Back on Jesus” which was previously recorded by Lyrix (Eaton). Keith Green, Phil Keaggy, and Randy Stonehill all did “Love Broke Thru.” There are plenty of other examples. So, it does happen. Anyone remember any others?

Petra covered 4 E Band songs, if that counts:
The Coloring Song
Praise Ye The Lord
Without Him We Can Do Nothing
Let Everything that Hath Breath
Also, Guardian covered Stryper's entire first album.

Royalties must be paid to do cover songs, so no, there isn't much money in it now. Back in the day, CCM bands on the same label did covers to give the songs some legs with new/different audiences. CCM bands would seed audiences for another artist's tour. It was all about relationships.
As an aside from covers, in the secular world, owners of songs would have multiple artists record songs. As a song gained in popularity bigger artists would cover. Sometimes, writers had multiple artists cover and have crap for sales until an artist put a new spin on it and then have a hit. But, that was a different era. Read up on Motown, The Temptations, The Supremes, Marvyn Gaye, and Smokie.
The reason song titles are the same has nothing to do with Christianese per se, although there are lots of Christianese buzz words that get worn out. It is a part of song marketing. If you write a song and it has the same titles as another popular song, search engines and playlists will elevate it. This is perfectly legal. There is a book by Simon Hawkings called "Song Maps". He is a writer who writes with people all over the world and has succeeded in the CCM and country music industry. He discusses this in the book. Song titles and road maps (the story behind the song) are usually developed, then the lyrics.

I would put tribute albums in a different category. Also would put material brought over from someone’s previous band in a different category. I think what we’re talking about is a song originally performed or made popular by one artist being done as a one-off by someone else.

So TUOSAS singing Independence Day doesn't count either then, right?

But like, it had One Bad Pig on it, and Dana Key, unless there were two, I think that might have been the case, because Guardian was on one too.

I was thinking of The Mother of All Tribute Albums, that had One bad pig on it but it wasn't a Larry Norman tribute
