Well, what do we have here? A recording of Disciple six years earlier!

From Mark Hollingsworth,

Captured live in front of 2,000 people when Petra was the opening act for mainstream band, Mason Proffit. The original version of the song features harmonizing guitar parts.

Six years later, composer Bob Hartman told me that they were getting ready to go in the studio to record “More Power To Ya,” and he was thinking they needed one more song to fill out the album. I mentioned “Disciple” to him, and his eyes lit up. “I completely forgot about that one,” he enthusiastically recalled. They went in and arranged a new version that included John Slick on keys, with Mark Kelly doing the lead vocal.

It went on to become a big concert staple on their sold-out world tours from ’82-84. This recording is from the initial quartet version of the band: Bob (slide guitar, lead vocal, composer), Greg (guitar, harmony vocal), Bill Glover (drums, harmony vocal), and John DeGroff (bass). Concert mix by Al Hornung. Recording by John Wheeler.

I went through his other videos too. They are fantastic! So many lost Petra gems from the 70s. Thanks!

Very cool! During their time together in Classic Petra, I had hoped to hear Mark Kelly & Greg X Volz perform a modern version of "Disciple." Although they typically stuck to the Back to the Rock set list, I always wondered why this song was never covered during their years of touring.
