I've got my list of connections between Kansas and Petra ready to go. It's not linked from anywhere else on the site yet... gotta figure out where would be a logical place. Hmm.

Anyway, stop by and see what you think.

The only problem I see is that Petra did not record one cover song, since the one you have listed is not God Gave Rock and Roll to You.

Nice catch. Was "God Gae Rock and Roll to You" an exact cover, or were some of the lyrics changed like KISS did?

Yes lyrics were changed. Does this exempt it from still being a cover?

Petra changed lyrics, Kiss changed lyrics too. Technically, legally, this is a closer to a cover than a parody, because the majority of the tune remained the same.

Hereis Argent playing God Gave Rock and Roll for anyone that's never heard it.

The Come and Join Us version remains le mieux.

Argent featured Russ Ballard - who wrote the song "God Gave Rock n' Roll to You" performed by Petra ... he also wrote the song "Since You've Been Gone" performed by Head East  Thats so crazy! lol

What God Gave

That's a good catch! I suppose GGR&RTY could be considered a "rewrite" although you guys are right... closer to a cover than a parody, for sure. I don't have the time at the moment, but when I get a chance I'll notate that one. Since it's not an exact cover, though, I'll stick by my guns. HA!! Image

I don't think Dino was involved with Kansas. John was the lead singer for several years.

Those are, to me, kind of a different animal, and I don't know if I would put Matt Redman or whoever on a par with Keith Green and the Beatles. Come to think of it, I don't know if I would put Argent up their either, since it seems like they're fairly obscure now for a band that in their prime were so well-known (sort of like Head East!)

As a songwriter. On most of the Kansas Elefante songs, it says "by John Elefante and Dino Elefante".
