well, even if Creed had been a Christian band, I wouldn't put Scott Stapp on a best of list because he can't carry a tune.
I can't name an absolute favorite. I like John Schlitt and John E. on most anything. Michael Sweet is one of my favorite artists, but he has done some things vocally that make me cringe.
I always liked the original Guardian vocalist, Paul Cawley, as well as the work of Ken Tamplin. Another one I thought was good was the vocalist for a band called Watchmen. I believe his name was Greg Sweet.
I also like the guy from Burlap to Cashmere. Not really rock, but still good. Being from NJ, I guess I'm partial to anything good from the NY/NJ area.

I must admit, every now and then Bill Gaither will be on TV with one of his homecoming specials and I find my myself watching it and soaking it in. Something I wondered about: Many churches that are opposed, or at least resistant to, contemporary christian music probably sing quite a few songs that were written by Bill Gaither. They are in a lot of hymn books. Was there a time when the church considered the music Bill Gaither, etc. to be too worldly?

The Girls

Post by Preacherman777 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 10:15 pm

As far as the girls go, I think one of the best female rock singers I have ever heard, Christian or otherwise is Sarah Tennison who sang on the Rock Power Praise albums and also did some BGV's for Petra. Sadly, I've never been able to find much else that she has done.

I'd say either Greg Volz or Ken Tamplin. Volz has the more pleasing voice, in my opinion, but Tamplin has a greater range (reportedly 4-octaves to Volz's 3). In Tamplin's song "I Hear Crying", he starts the song almost as a baritone and ends it as a soprano.

I think the edge goes to Volz, though, because his enunciation is very precise and clear while Tamplin has a tendency to slur his words.

After many months of lurking (becuase of a lost password), it feels good to be back.

Absolutely John Schlitt. After I saw him on the Farewell Tour, I was amazed how he has maintained most of his range.

I'm also a fan of Bob Carlysle. Unfortunately, I discovered the Allies on their last tour. He is another guy with a great live voice.

I've never been a big Greg Volz fan, although I've been a Petra fan since 1982. He has a great range, but seemed to be all over the place with it. Never out of tune, just not my style.

I found this: Hello Forever by Scott Springer

And this list of CDs she has appeared on.

Man, I forgot about Tamplin! The guy definitely has some range. Plus he can play guitar like a mug!!!

I am HUGE Keith Green fan. You said Jason Upton is just like Keith. Can you describe how? I have never listened to him.

Maybe Ken Tamplin and an Eventide Harmonizer can do four octaves.

I suspect that none of use have really heard the best. We have only heard the most popular in a specific genre. Some of the best singers and musicians are NOT stars.

Amen to that.

However, I feel the cream does rise, so I'm sure we're heard some of the best for sure.
