I need tips?
I'm interested in going into Business Management when I go to College. After that, I would like to start a record label or work for or own River Records( you may remember that name from when Greg X. Volz was well known.) Could you give me any tips to help in my journey?

My tip would be NOT to do it!!! But like many around here I'm on the outside looking in. I feel Brent would have the best advice about this.

I would say if that's the call God has put on you to go for it but to be cautious--You do have to walk carefully in the business world and the music biz. That will be the case for any profession to some extent or another. The music biz needs more people who have a heart for God. I would talk to a lot of people and make sure you're informed, and I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket or limit your options to just that. Exe is right, Brent could probably give you some sound advice.

First of all, let it be far from me to squish a dream, alright? But the music business is in a world of hurt. There is no longer a need for a label. The big four are near the end of their rule. They have exhausted their resources. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT TO DO.
The ONLY reason that an artist needs a label is MONEY. Labels are just very connected loan sharks. They do what is in their best interest first.
Gambling is not recommended in scripture. The whole industry of selling Jesus in a CD jewel case is a crap shoot. You are spending money that you may not ever see again, on people that may or may not be accepted, by people that may or may not buy.
Now, if that does not scare you, I sure could use about 25 grand to finish the next PDC record. I have a standing order for 20k units.
If you want to manage business, and you want to be involved in music or entertainment in general, I would recommend working for a mega church broadcast ministry. That's what I used to do until recently. I produced audio and video for tv and radio ministries. We got into the music side of it. Church was a production weekly, on par with the pro touring scene. Managing and producing for these mega pastors is everybit as challenging as the touchy-feely irrational secular artist who is constantly tweaking.

i was just curious. bob and john did the veritical expressions cd as an indie. considering the production costs and whatnot did they do well enough sales wise to make it worthwhile even though it has only been available on their website? i don't ask this question to be nosy or to find out about their finances (that's none of my business), but as a fan i hope their ministry is doing well even though they are no longer on a label since petra retired. i hope and pray their ministry can continue to be viable as an independent venture. that's the reason for my question. thanks
