"Beat the System" Release Date Controversy

Being the @n@l-retentive music collector, I've noticed that there's considerable controversy over which year Beat the System was released: 1984 or 1985.

The album itself has a publishing date of 1984, as does every Petra compilation which contains songs from BTS, except Petrafied: The Best of Petra , The Ultimate Collection, and Double Take, all of which provide a date of 1985. And although Petra's War & Remembrance booklet gives BTS' release date as 1985, the copyright for BTS songs is 1984.

My guess is that the album was recorded in 1984 but not released until 1985. Is that the gist?[/i]

Publishing date and release dates do not always match.

There could be some misprints, or other circustances related to the tunes that Greg V had a hand in. Sometimes publishing rights/shares are negotiated and do not last the lifetime of the tune. if that makes sense.

I know this has always made me wonder, because I first bought the cassette version in early 1985 and it has 1984 on it, but later that year I bought the CD version(which one song is shorter) and all liner notes say 1985 on it, including for each individual song. The samething is for my CITAS copies I have 1985 for the cassette and 1986 for the CD.

Very odd. My BTS CD's liner notes read 1984!

Holy cow people. What does the announcer say at the beginning of CITAS? "Beat the System Tour 1985 with Petra". Were those songs published in 1985? No. They were written and recorded long before that for the BTS album. If you look at some of Word's rereleases, they have dates that say 1991.

There is more to this than the release date of the original.

:::In my best Obama voice:::

Let's be clear ... ;-)

My Beat the System CD liner notes read 1984 all around. Absolutely no mention of 1985.

January 1985 was when it was released. I was calling every week to my local christian book store wanting to get the cassette and they kept telling me it wouldn't be released til 2nd week of january 1985. I remember it clearly because the then local fm christian station ahd a release party where they just played the entire album right straight through the daqy it came out. Snow was on the ground and the christmas decorations were already put away and school had been in session for at least a week or 2.

There was an episode where one of the kids shoplifted an lp from the local record store. if you look the lp he stole was captured in time and space.

I think we make WR1U our official Petra historian.

In the movie Mindwarp, at the beginning, the girl puts a CD into a discman, and I swear it's Petra Praise 2.

AH! A Jan 1985 release would make sense of the copyright/publication disconnect! I'm guessing it was supposed to be released in 1984 and, for some reason or another, it was delayed until 1985.

It was out in 84. It may not have been available in some stores until 85. I was listening to it in 84.

I thought the big deal was with BTTS?
