Move to Java based forum?

Hi all,

Since this thing is a bit unmaintainable as some of you know, I'd kind of like to change platforms. Perhaps phpBB3 would be OK, but I'm really starting to look in the direction of Java.

Just found a list of Java based forums:
http://java-source.net/open-source/forum-software
I haven't yet investigated any of them, but thought I'd throw the list out for you all, in case any of you have any knowledge or thoughts about them.

I suspect we would have to start over, with no importation of users and comments, unless something like JavaBB can import phpBB stuff (I don't know, haven't yet checked). If that happens, I'll keep this around in read-only mode for quite some time, for reference.

Anyway I'm going to bed now (I work nights). Just thought I'd throw this out before I start investigating/testing some of these this weekend hopefully.

phpBB3 would be suitable, if you need someone to do the upgrade.. my hand is raised :)

Hmm I just kind of want to get rid of PHP as much as possible. :) I work in Linux server hosting and see PHP sites hacked *all* the time. they can be somewhat secure with care though, and phpBB3 would likely be least painful.

I have no clue about any of the techie stuff, but if you think it's necessary....

As long as there is a loud and bold message somewhere that the board has moved so people know where to find the new place.

Just throwing this out.

What if you redirected to petrarocksmyworld. Josh has updated frequently and it would save you some headache.

Then there wouldn't be moderators, or admins or anything like that.

Josh would be the only one able to do anything. I think the Zone needs to keep it's own identity.

The Zone will have no identity if it looses all the old posts, users etc... as it is the zone is a great hook for page rank in search engines technically speaking.

Sue can re-type all of the posts into the new forum. She has nothing else to do.

Josh's site is slick. What are the stats for this site? I bet that they are down from what they were a couple of years ago. All we can do here is talk. As time elapses fewer will participate. It seems like a good idea, having one power-house site with a forum, reviews, store, etc that unifies all of the fans.
