Below is the bible study centered around Mastadon's song Sex, taken from the application booklet that comes with the video. The song was written by Bob Hartman.
Mastadon - SEX
When we want to mesmerize
When we want to advertise
Sex! They use it so well.
When they want a new appeal
When they want to close a deal
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! It's all you see
In the movies and on TV.
Sex! It's all that you hear
With nothing to hide and nothing to fear
They use it so well when they've got something to sell you.
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! When they've got something to sell you.
When they want to pass the buck
When they want to press their luck
Sex! They use it so well.
Well, when they want to call the shots
They wait until you grab the hook
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! It's all you see
In the moves and on TV.
Sex! You know it's all that you hear
With nothing to hide and nothing to fear
They use it so well when they've got something to sell you.
Sex! They use it so well.
Sex! When they've got something to sell you
Sex! They want to mesmerize.
Sex! They want to hypnotize.

Have you ever stopped to consider how the media, in all of it's hype and glamour, is dictating to us how we should live our lives, especially in the area of our sexuality?
The media is (in it's own subtle way) establishing standards for us what we believe we must somehow live up to. We seem to think that if we don't meet that standard we are inadequate or inferior.
Let's face it SEX SELLS!
Think of some commercials that you know are selling a product by exploiting sex or through sexual innuendos.
What are these companies communicating to you about who you are and how you should live your life?
In what areas of your life have you compared yourself to those on television or in the movies, and wished that you could change? (i.e. I wish my eyes or hair were a different color, or I wish I could be more like.)
Has that made you feel inadequate or insecure? How?
What about your peers? Do you feel that they expect you to be a certain way or dress a certain way? Do you expect the same of them?
What percentage of how you feel about yourself would you say is ultimately determined by the media?
0% 25% 50% 75% 100%
What percentage of how you feel about yourself would you say is ultimately determined by God and the Bible?
0% 25% 50% 75% 100%
How would you say that God deals with sex in the Bible?
___Positive ___Negative
Read Genesis 1:27-28 & Genesis 2:24-25
- Who created sex and why?
Do you think that it's possible for God not to approve of something that He has created?
What is the proper context for sex?
Have you ever wondered why God is so in favor of sex between married people, yet still gives so many negative commandments in the Bible regarding sex? Could it be that our confusion here comes from misunderstanding what God is teaching? Never does God tell us that the proper use of sex (sex within marriage) is wrong, only the misuse (outside of marriage).
Why do you think that God gave us a sex drive, then, all through the Bible, forbids us to act on it?
Maybe God's greatest motivation is not to keep us from having fun, but to create for us the greatest opportunity for a love, marriage and sexual relationship. God's commandments are there to protect us and to provide for us.
Summary:
There are a lot of people who would like to tell you how you should live your life, what type of clothes you should wear, how you should act etc. But the only source of information that is truly in our best interest is that which comes from God and His word. Sex is a wonderful gift from God, and is meant to be enjoyed, but within the loving commitment of marriage. True love can never be replaced with sex. There is a whole world out there that would like you to change your standards, and are confusing the intimacy of love with the intensity of sex. Just remember that God's plan
is best, and you
are worth waiting for!
