I think I've read that Shatner was starring in the last Star Trek movie too (the one named "Star Trek"), but that he was edited out.

Bwuhahahaha....kriks. Good catch.
In several interviews Bill said that he has never met JJ and would love to work with him. In his own little youtube show, he said that he was never approached.
There WERE some edited scenes available on the dual DVD set that gave a bit more insight into Kirk's step father and their relationship which caused Kirk to steal the Vette and trash it. I think there were other missing scenes that could have tied some details up better. Why was Spock sitting in that hole in the ice and how was he not frozen to death? How did he know how far the outpost was away from his location? Why did he not go where it was warm? There is just some common sense stuff that they could have explained.
