I think the problem is that you mixed up the doppler effect with the doppler illusion/Stevens's rule. If you instead had said something like; recent research has discovered that changed volume can affect perceived pitch, we would just have been intrigued. Instead you made some obviously incorrect statements and then just told us to read up on it. That behavior is never convincing.

That may be your point of view, but that is not the motivation for the resident math man. You are correct, I used the word effect when I should have used illusion...or maybe it should be delusion :). I apologized.

Well, I don't have time to read all that, but I saw all I needed...it comes from the Psych department, you can't trust anything from the Psych department!!

When I was in college, the psych lab was right below our physics lab, and we're pretty sure it skewed all the constants and was largely to blame when our experiments failed!!!

Besides, from what I did read, that is all about perception. We all know how optical illusions play with our minds. But just because we perceive it to be one way does not change the actual physical properties or facts.

So... In what way is this illusion linear at 85dB then? Is that the level you perceive from your own voice inside of your head when singing with your ears plugged?

You are missing it. 85dB is where a large segment of the population has the most linear hearing. That segment has normal hearing with minimal loss. Those with hearing loss, threshold shift, etc are another story.

I guess psycho acoustics are thrown out the window as well? That is not a very educated statement. Everyday, millions of people watch TV, movies, recordings, experience proper distributed sound, etc....under the influence and completely fooled by psycho acoustics.

Ever use a MAXXBass plug in from Waves?

So that statement was still just about the Fletcher-Munson curves? The human ear is NOT designed to be linear and is NOT close to linear at any sound pressure level. 85dB is about the level where most people begin to risk damage of your hearing.

Every time I ask something, you keep referring to other things not related to the question. Why? Is it to educate me in general?

I'm not throwing anything out the window...that remark was purely tongue in cheek, I'm sorry if you missed it. I was just trying to implant a little humor and re-live some college memories at the same time.

Though I still maintain my position that amplitude has no physical impact on frequency. I'm not disputing that we may percieve things differently. But while perception may seem very real, and can, in fact, have very real consequences, it is NOT reality. A man lost in the desert may see an oasis which looks very real to him. However, if it is merely an illusion, there will be no life-saving water for him.

I understand this is something sound professionals may have to take into account in their work. But that still does not change actual physical properties.

Oh, I thought he said that to me. No wonder I didn't understand...
