Just a couple of points-and for the record, I think public schooling in general needs to be revamped, not just for christians.
First of all, don't argue with me if you aren't going to read the book. That just shows me that you'd rather choose to be ignorant than to have a real debate.
Grow up, SU. If you're basing your entire argument on one book it shows you haven't researched the subject either.
I don't doubt they exist. BUT, from someone who has lived in Hawaii, Chicago, N.C., Tennessee, and Missouri (following my father's career as a pastor and navy chaplain) and has 10+ years teaching experience I can say with a high degree of certainty that our teachers are good quality people.
Nobody's doubting they're good people, I think the results of the efforts of said people are being doubted. I always have good intentions, but I don't always get the job done. That's just the way it is, sometimes.

I know that Gwinnett County GA BOE failed all 3 of my boys. Wanted one on drugs EVEN after his DR said it was not needed. Said one would never get a deploma ant one that would never read.

I took them out and we are not on drugs we are only i grade behind in math ant the one who would never read well he is reading the left behind books over the summer. Not much he is 9 years old.

I do have papers from the BOE that says all I have said but the use words to make you think they know everything.

Did ya'll know that the teaching profession is by % the LARGEST profesion to homeschool. I have a sister and a brother in law who are teachers in my county and both of them said to get the out as fast as you can.

That is what I have to say about it. But just because it works for us does not mean it will work for you.

Like I said, there are always going to be examples of good and bad in every profession. There are school systems around here that aren't up to par, by far. But here are two points in your child's success in school

1) The systems around here that aren't up to par are the counties that do not offer competitive pay. The school systems who turn out the most kids who are college bound are the ones who pay well. So first year teachers and under qualified teachers end up in the county systems that aren't doing as well. Businesses learned long ago that to be successful they had to employ the best and brightest. The same is true for schools. I would bet that the Gwinett County doesn't pay as well as some others in the state.

2) Parent involvement is paramount. Students receive between 6 - 7 hours of instruction at school. That's 25% of the day. Realistically, by the time you have lunch, recess, related arts, and various other interuptions it is much less. You stated that once you took control of the situation at home things changed. I bet they would have if you had left them in public school and still spent that extra time. Remember You have three to teach, their teacher had 20 at least. Could you have had the same results with 20 kids. If the teacher spent only 15 minutes with each child to make sure that got the extra they needed it would take 5 solid hours. Most parents aren't as dedicated as you. They expect their child to get everything they need at school. It's just not feasible. Parents have to take an active role at home, whether it be public or Christian school.

I was planning on notgetting into this argument argument anymore. Then this post came along...

I have already stated that I am not basing my argument off of "one book." The Closing Of The American Mind just happens to be the book that best describes the overall and underlying problems with the public education system in its present form. I could list more sources, but since it's obviously too difficult to read one book when I recommend it so that you can fully understand where I'm coming from, why should I bother naming off more?

I believe Shell said something about Dr. Bloom not being all knowing, and I do realize that (I even stated in one of my earlier posts that I don't agree with his conclusion on how to change the current system), however, Dr. Bloom is/was an educator, at the very least on the collegiate level, and I do believe if I remember correctly, he was a high school teacher at one point as well, and I believe he teaches/taught at an Ivy League school (Harvard, I think).
