Bride– The Worm

Post by Diehardpetrafan:) » Tue Jun 02, 2020 3:37 pm

This is one of my favorite Bride songs, but I find the lyrics sort of confusing. Anyone here know what they mean?

Bride— "The Worm
__________________________________________
You don't know how it feels to be Me
To be sitting on the edge dangling my feet
Wondering if god would give his angels charge
If I was feeling small
If my mind was growing large
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
You don't know how it feels to be Me
Having all these faces looking in to see
Their eyes are white lit just like a torch
To burn my soul which is thin and which is worn
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
Take my life
Take my life
Take my life
Before I taken it myself
You don't know how it feels to be me
To be a poet nailed to this tree
Where are my accusers those who ridicule
Those who have learned to hate and curse this silly fool
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head
I am the worm crawling through your head

I love Bride but the meaning of many of their songs is hard to discern. I will try to think of what it means but I am unsure; however it might be vaguely based on Psalm 22

Oh, true. I was trying to decide if it was maybe the thief on the cross at the end of Jesus' crucifixion, too.

Yes, The Worm is loosely based on Psalm 22.

Dale Thompson really likes to write perspective-songs, looking at a certain topic/moment from the perspective of a certain person. This is one of those. He applies the metaphors on Psalm 22 on a person (in some sentences clearly recognisable as Jesus), who tells the story of the crucifixion from their own perspective. It's typically Dale to give this revenge-like twist to it, where the person says, I am a worm, but at the same time the worm that his accusers will never be able to get rid off. Petra's lyrics are very straightforward and clear and obvious, but Bride is always close to the poetic (with its licenses).

Oh okay. I see how some of it sounds like Jesus, but I wasn't sure.

It's hard to tell with Dale Thompson sometimes because he has some rather interesting ideas about theology. For instance, I know he's a big proponent of universalism, which is the belief that everybody will repent one way or another, and that hell will eventually be emptied, which is obviously not something supported by scripture. I recall he (or at least someone claiming to be him) randomly showed up on a previous version of the The Petra Zone to argue this with some of the members here. I also recall that he believes that it is impossible for a Christian to sin, which, again, is contrary to scripture.

Dale did have a flirt with universalism in 2003-2004, but I'm not sure if it was a passing thing or not. I haven't heard any controversy involving Dale's theological views in the laste decade. I'm never quite sure what all of Bride's songs are a about, so I can't say if he stills holds those views.

Rock band vocalists are seldom theologians with good exegesis. I had a confrontation with him on Facebook. You could say I was blind sided. This was back in the universalism days. All I know is whosoever will MAY come. There is one way to the Father. Jesus is the only way. God is WILLING none should perish. But we all know that hell will be full and heaven will be exponentially less populated. Obviously, there is no room for Calvinism or Universalism. Those things are tools to relieve the responsibility and ease the conscience of the sloth.

Fair point. I am referring to old information. Perhaps he's since had a Great Awakening and has gotten his head straight.

Oh, I didn't know that about him. I hope he's turned around a bit now. But I think The Worm is from 2001
