Band-starting help, anyone?

I don't have a band, but really want to start one. I don't have any skill, friends, or money to speak of, and from what I've seen at least one of those is absolutely necessary. Can anyone here help?

Me and my brother wanted to do it together, with me as the keyboardist and him as the singer... I would also write the songs, and maybe he could play the guitar enough to get by for awhile. Right now we're working on our "first song" with a friend who plays the acoustic guitar, and who also hates rock music... as you can see, I'm pretty desperate.

So... WHY would you like to start a band then?

Just play music with your brother, get good. Then play in public down town or the city. You don't need money, play in public and you might get some money if you're good, or even if you're bad. Try local talent competitions too.

Because I love music (especially 80s-style rock), and I also see somewhat of a lack of good bands out there, that perhaps I could fill. I want to write and play music that actually glorifies God, and hopefully would sound good, too :) It's just that my conditions aren't conducive to starting a rock band.

You have to have the foundation to build the house. You guys need to get good at playing. Being a good musician removes obstacles. If you start off with no chops and no songs, then you have to overcome all of that, instead of focusing on band rehearsals, stage presence, set-lists, bookings, etc. If you are good, you will attract the people needed to round things out. If you are not good, nobody good will want to come be a part of it, because life is too short and there is no purpose.

I agree with Brent.

The first thing to do is practice, practice, practice with your own instruments or vocals or whatever you are doing.
You cant just get into a car and drive without learning how to drive first ( you could but you would just end up in a wreck).
Same goes with music, learn your stuff, practice and get good and then start showing up at talent shows or christian coffee houses or whatever, where you know there might be other musicians with the same idea as you.
